The Eyeball?
I recently saw a pattern plane from the old days( maybe the early 70's) called the Eyeball. I can't remember what magazine I saw it in, but it has real nice lines and was a mid wing I think. Does anyone remember it? I'd like to find plans for it if I can.

The Eyeball was published in Model Airplane News. I have the magazine and I know that they still sell the plans. Nice flying plane.. a bit short coupled compared to what we are flying today.. but .. still a vintage classic. Dan Hines Carolina Custom Aircraft |

Thanks, guys. I see it has a sheeted foam wing. I don't know anyone with a foam wing core cutter. I guess I could scratch out a built up wing. I'll go to the vintage forum and sniff around.[:-]

I flew an Art Schroeder Eyeball in AMA pattern in the late '70s and it is a very good flying
airplane. The original had a built up rib wing and could be built very light. The only trim issue I had with mine was some roll coupling with rudder which could be programmed out easily with todays radios. It was very fast but could be slowed to a crawl for landings. You'll like it. tommy s |

Sorry to go off topic, but I followed the link to the MAN plans site and I saw the Sweetater and the Saturn SE. They are both awesome looking airplanes! Does anybody know anything about either of these two (or both)? What era were they from and what are the flying qualities? Thanks.

Both these planes are mid-seventies pattern airplanes. Saw a few Saturns flown at the Canadian Nationals back in 1978.

Eureka Aircraft will be producing a short kit of the Eyeball shortly. I just got one of thier first kits of the TroubleMaker. The workmanship is first class.

Just finished the laser parts for the Eyeball release. It is in the web site now. Built up wing version is ready, foam wing version in a couple of weeks. The fololowing SPA legal short kits are ready now: The Troublemaker The Banshee The Eyeball MK V The J-bipe They are all produced from the original J&J mylars, the original dies, the original die transperancies, etc. The original dies are used if still good, otherwise laser cut parts are used. Going by the copies of all of the old adds for the Eyeball I have here, It is supposed to fly knife edge with no correction 'right out of the box'. I find that hard to beleive, but I'm just going by all of the old adds. I should have my demo Eyeball ready to fly in a week or so, just needs to be covered and set up. I wil see how accurate the old adds are at that time.

I had two of them and I can tell you mine would not fly knife edge out of the box. I don't
know that much about aerodynamics so I can't explain it but the roll coupling was very strong in the same direction as the applied rudder. It was strong enough to fly the airplane without ailerons, it would even do a rudder roll. You had to apply enough aileron to counteract the rudder roll to fly knifedge. The airplane was so fast I used no rudder input on 4-point rolls, just bumped the aileron stick 4 times. Other than that issue it was a very honest and easy to fly airplane and would slow down very slow for landings, I liked it a lot, looked good too. I had mine painted black and white with scallops on the tail like Bonettis Troublemaker with a little red and bright blue trim. tommy s |
