Pattern Definition
 

Can anyone describe what is meant by pattern flying vs. aerobatic flying. They both seem to be the skill of flying certain maneuvers in a crisp, symmetrical, linear fashion. What makes a plane a pattern plane/aerobatic plane? Thanks.

Pattern flying is the common term to refer to flying either AMA Precision Aerobatics classes Sportsman through Masters or FAI F3A. It's aerobatics flying defined by preset maneuver schedules for each class (Patterns), hence the nickname. The current rules also describe the airframe limits, i.e. 2 meters (78.74 in) long, 2 meters in span, 5 kilograms (11 lbs) weight unfueled.
