Retract Mounting

What is the preferred fastener for securing the retract to the wood rails.
Are screws better, or bolts with blind nuts?

I use nylon 4/40 bolts and blind nuts on the main gear. http://image.rcuniverse.com/forum/up...77/Bz77225.jpg

Rookie,

I wouldn't go with the screws....I use 6-32 hex head screws/blind nuts to mount mine....I think 8178 has a good idea with the nylon.. but I haven't tried that.

I’ve used the 4/40 nylon bolts for decades, they have worked great for me and they fit the standard Rom-Air and Spring Air retract gear mounting plate holes. On the other hand I’ve not had a hard landing in many decades so they have not been tested to the extreme. My original idea was to use them to keep the landing gear strut from bending on a hard landing by letting the nylon bolt heads to snap off.

8178,

I know what you mean by the "no hard landing" thing. I don't know if it is just all the experience or because I have always loved shooting touch and goes....and besides... if you fly pattern.. you really shouldn't be having hard landings.... so now we've done it.. tempted the airplane gods to smite us the on our next landing.. LOL...

Thanks all for your replies.

It seems to be unanimous to just use bolts and blind nuts.
I'll have to look into the nylon bolts. The local hardware store has a big selection of this type of stuff.
The plane I'll be putting the landing gear in is in the 8-9 pound area.

Thanks again,
Greg
