My reasoning tells me that changing the position of the TE is going to have a greater effect on the balance of the model since you would be making the tail moment 11mm longer. Making the nose 11mm longer should create less of a change in balance. (adding 11mm of mass to the tail has a greater effect than adding 11mm of mass to the nose) So in cases where this discrepency exists, I'd pull back the LE and leave the TE alone.

Yes - the original was the builtup that came in the MK kit.

Its got Prettners modified airbrake arrangement instead of the original ply extension

Hobby Barn sold the Minare in fiberglass and foam kit form "back in the days". I always meant to get one, but never got around to it. A good friend of mine built and flew both the Minare and the Super Curare from Hobby Barn. Both were very nice airplanes.

A couple of Curares at our flying field this afternoon. The yellow/red/blue/white one has a Webra 61 Champion for power, and is built-up from the original MK kit. The red/white/blue one has an OS 61 FX for power and is scratch built foam and glass construction. Both have about the same weight, and great performance!

I use a mini servo for the brakes and a standard servo for the flaps. All used torque rods like aileron except both sides are driven from one side of the servo for obvious reasons.

I dont use the brakes though as they kill the lift on landing (it just falls out of the sky) and seem to make no difference during dives. The flaps are all that is needed (which is what the magic had). The original flap extensions were to counter the pitch up tendancy. I just mix in some down nowadays. A deadstick glide is far better than it was for the flaps with extensions and you can couple the flaps to elevator (flaps up with down elev. etc), to tighten corners.

Hi guys. I have just been given a complete "Magic". I haven't had a chance to collect it yet. Does any body have any pics of one? I'm also after relevant info ie CG, approx weight. It is just a case of getting it and adding battery and Rx.
Also apart from the Magic having an internal pipe, what is the difference between the Curare and Magic?

I am in the process of building an original MK Curare 60 which I bought from Singapore Hobbies some months ago. They are being kitted again. Also the original MK retracts.
Picked up a Rossi 61 and a pipe for it. Should be sweet once I have it done.

Just a little background I lived in South Africa from 1971 until 1990 when I returned to UK. I won't bore you with to much detail but I became very active within the South African F3A community and did fairly well on the aerobatic circuit up-to the time I left. Whilst there I had the Pleasure of meeting Hans and Hanno Prettener on 3 of his visits. He flew in our National championships twice. I looked for pictures of his Curare and found some that I am sure you will all enjoy looking at. From memory the year was 1977 when these pictures were taken at the Potchefstroom Nationals. www.potchefstroom.co.za .

We also had visits from Wolfgang Matt and also Don Lowe with his P8 which he allowed me to fly (fantastic model) in addition we had other high profile pilots visit us at various times.

It's a pleasure glad you enjoyed the pictures, the Curare was a fantastic model. I only ever owned one which I competed with, power used was a Webra speed 61 with a Webra tuned Pipe and Dave Brown retracts.

Does anyone know what material Prettner used under the dope? I know that tissue was used a lot instead of silk by some people. The model doesn't seem to have countless coats of buffed-out clear either (with FAI fuel you wouldn't be nitro-proofing anyway).

Hi

Hanno used Monokote for the wings, I am sure he said he used K&B resin and 3/4 ozs cloth on the fuselage with 2 Pack K&B for the colours, this was a great product I used it for all my pattern-ships.

Around 1977 silk and nylon were being used less, well in South Africa they were, not sure about the US. If silk or nylon were applied correctly then it made a very durable finish, I used it for a couple of pattern-ships but it did tend to crack with age unless you mixed other ingredient's to make it more flexible, Dave Brown still offers an excellent product which goes by the name of Flex-All see this link http://www.dbproducts.com/store/flex.htm .

Thanks, John. I would have never suspected that was Monokote in a million years. It just doesn't have that plastic film shine in the photos. Any chance he painted over the Monokote?

No he didn't paint over the monokote it could be the picture which is scanned from a slide which maybe the problem. I have attached a higher resolution picture which does show up some of the gloss on the Monokote.

By the way we cannot buy Monokote in the UK which is a real shame almost everyone in South africa used it for their pattern-ships. We get Profilm or Oracover as it is known and all the Solarfilm products.

I have the original MK Curare 40 plan.
Further : I can get my hands on a MK curare 40 and 60 kit, yes the original kit.
If some of you are interested, I buy it, copy the plans and the kit. I have acces to lasercutting services
If interested, send me a message, and if enough of you are wanting an MK kit (copy), I start working on it.
In that case, I can deliver exact copies of the original MK 40 and 60 models.
Further : I can deliver copies with GFK fuselange and cut wings of the .20 and .60.

Here's a picture of my original, more then 20 year old MK Curare 40, and a Curare 20.
Soon, I'll have a Magic 40 and a Curare 60 as well.
The Curare 40 is in original colors. The picture is taken two months before he made a serious crash, but the bird will get recovered !
