Sleeper design Just for Fun ! !

Ok, this is something that I may wish, I'd never posted just because some of you "Classic" guys, may buy them all up! ;)

While waiting on my CA-T2AMKII I was looking around for something quick, easy and inexpensive to fly on a .46ish size engine. And since I'm just a low/middle income type of "Redneck Texan", I don't have unlimited funds to buy custom built/ready to fly planes so I have always built from plans, pulled wreckage from the dumpster at the field, or used butcher paper, a photograph and a custom made ruler and built my aircraft.

So while looking at some of the ONLINE vendors, those at least that I remember, that seem to appreciate my hard earned dollars, I thought of Jim Martin over in Tennessee. He always seemed to have that plane that was a bit "different" but affordable and some of the neatest accessories and tools, that were either NOT made here or were just not available. I began browsing his wares and "clicked" on the GLOW AIRCRAFT icon and this plane jumped off the page at me.

It looks like the old "Lou Andrews" Sport Master, which I had built from a borrowed set of plans years ago. I love the double tapered wing (Super Kaos), Canopy (with pilot), tricycle gear(fixed), and I couldn't believe the WS-61" lots of wing!

Then reading on, I discover that the ailerons are HINGED and PINNED i might add, Elevator is hinged, Rudder is hinged all pinned in the old fashioned way so I look and see that it is covered completely. I only have to join the wing, glue the horizontal and vertical stabs on the fuse, install the tank (included) put servos in the fuse because all the push rods are cut and installed ! ! ! ! Put the wheels on the axles (all included) gas this puppy up and go fly! ! Certainly an "OVERNIGHT" build for anybody with just a tiny bit of experience.

So I'm sharing this with my Classic/BPA Buds as this might be a Great plane to have a ONE DESIGN CONTEST!

Now, I have a BRAND new OS 55 hung on the nose (as yet not run) but it should be a dynamite engine for this airplane. After all I flew my "Sportmaster" on a ST-56 for those that remember them.

Below you will see some pictures of mine. I think I'll order another one today as I'm sure they will be sold out quickly when you guys see how great this little plane is...IMHO!

Discovered I forgot to mention that it also comes with a Bright RED spinner for the engine(included in the kit) So its simply the most complete package, I've ever seen for a very reasonable price. (IMO)

Here are the pictures:

airbusdrvr....Ijust read the graphics on the wing, added .com and ended up at Hobby-lobby. Plane looks good for price of 127.90+S&H.

airbusdrvr es pu-plover,

Sorry I didn't mention 'Hobby-Lobby' as the Vendor. Figured most guys would remember Jim and his business in Tennnessee. You did ferret out the company and I agree that the price for this amount of completed aircraft is quite a bargain.

airbus and 42yearbuilder; I am now considering this super air instead of looking all over for the Robbe MAXI!! This plane looks very similar, do'nt you think?

Careful with this model.

It is sold in the UK as the Blackhorse Superfly and mine lasted just three flights. Model is rather heavy as it is build from some strange far eastern wood that is slightly heavier and more brittle than balsa. The wing in particular is too heavy for it's size.

Flies OK with the engine running - mine had an Enya 50CX - but like a brick when the engine stops. Mine just fell out of the sky when turning gently into wind for a deadstick landing.

Closer examination showed that the wing had been built with a very blunt, almost flat, leading edge which I am sure did not help it's flying characteristics. Perhaps mine was a bad example but worth checking.

26 oz wing loading makes it a bit of a lead sled.

High Plains and RFJ,

Tnx.. for the heads up! I had not calculated the wing loading, but I think in listening to your description, you must have gotten an "early" one. The model you see pictured has a nice radius on the leading edge, model did not feel extremely heavy too me and I guess I will simply say that its been my lot in Modeling to tend to build my planes a bit on the heavy side. I learned to fly, where the wind was a GIVEN never less than 15mph and as high as 35 to 40 mph. So I learned to fly in the wind or you simply did not fly. Heavier models will penetrate a bit better so the weight won't bother me as I'm not going to "HOVER" this model, it will be a good sport, practice plane.

But you do have me curious about the Wing loading on mine now! [sm=confused.gif]

Still think its a great deal for the money. (IMHO)

[sm=lol.gif] High Plains,
You definitely know what its like to fly in the wind if your in KS! I grew up in a small farming community abt 30 miles east of Lubbock. You can appreciate there is nothing between KS and Lubbock but a barbed wire fence! With one runway, you quickly learned about Cross controlled landings! ;)

I grew up always hearing that Nebraska sucks and Oklahoma blows (or vice versa) to explain the wind. I'm sure that that gets adapted as you move up and down the praire states from the plains of Canada to the heart of Texas.

I find it a bit strange that the wing loadings of ARF's keep going up and are accepted as good flying models. Either people have not flown a light airplane, or the laws of physics have been changed.

It's not windy unless you can back into a landing.

High Plains

High Plains,

Need I remind you that we are NO Longer in the "Age of Aquarius" we are in the "NEW" age of "BARKING DOG FLYER'S"! You know they show up at the field and all you hear is "ARF ARF ARF"! ! ! ;)

I honestly think (IMHO) that the only way to OWN a truly lightly loaded aircraft, is to do it the "Old Fashioned" way...ie: Build it yourself!
[sm=wink_smile.gif]

BTW- did you notice my new "ARF" called ""SUPER AIR" ! ! <LMAO>

Tony,
I'm kinda offended by your remark about dogs at the field. Where else are we gonna fly OUR planes? I'm very into the hobby as well. My girlfriend just left me because I was spending too much time building and not "sniffing". I couldn't commit and she was a hot little French Poodle!
She did take this photo of me the day she left. Notice my Hanno autographed hat that I have on, always have to wear it when I'm building.:D

Good to know that dogs know that aircraft should have "nose" gears!

RE: Sleeper design Just for Fun ! !

Finally found this old thread!

Just to report an update on this little bird, been flying it for about 3 weeks now. Very impressed with the flight characteristics. Mine is still a bit nose heavy as I mounted the "radio gear" in the stock location since everything was ready to drop in. I will definitely be moving the CG back to factory specs.

Plane does great slow rolls with the ususal imputs to keep it flying on line. Point Rolls are fun 4 or 8 point. Figure M/1/4 rolls with nice honest stalls at the top.

My only change since the pictures, was to place one of Dub Jett's "JettStream" mufflers on the .55 AX. I've done most of the flying with an APC 10 x 8 but today I put a 30 yr old "Rev UP" 11 x 7 on it and seemed to fly the same speed as the 10 x 8. I also made a trip by the LHS and bought several APC's from 10 x 6, 11 x 5, 11 x 6 Oh and a 10 x10, just want to see what this little bugger will do with it.

Now, other than the fact that my plane is NOSE HEAVY due to my choice, first flight, I was enjoying the plane so much, I wasn't keeping track of time and ran out of fuel. I'd been shooting touch n go's, and even with the NOSE HEAVY condition I made a nice "NAVY" approach with a fairly large decending 360° right on down to touching the mains and holding the nose off until it finally settled down and drove it right to my feet. If anybody is interested in an quick building, nice flying "knock about" aircraft that you can throw in the back of your truck and leave it there. Its definitely got my vote!

Blackhorse models shows a 21.8 oz.in. wing loading on the super air. With a 55ax It should fly great.
The cobra .46 looks cool to. Has anyone flown one yet?
