Curare Semi Kit..

I recieved my Curare "Semi Kit" from PastTime Hobbies...What a Really nice looking set of Lazer Cut Parts!! The Print is Awesome!! (From what I can tell from the Quick Look Over I gave it)...I'm really looking forward to this one...

I was wondering if you guys may like a build thread?? I can take some shots along the way...I'm sure I'll have to pick you all's brains a bit anyway...

I have a YS .61 Side Exhaust allocated for this one...But...The thought is crossing my mind to get one of the Webra Speed .61 F's currently avaliable...I just think that would be kinda Kewl and keeping with Hanno's origional...

Have Fun...

Hey Chuck, You going with the built up wing or you want me to cut a set of foam cores for ya? Cost is postage, nothing more;)

Oh Man!! Foam Cores!! That would be Kewl!!

I was actually thinking about trying to cut a set myself...Have yet to attempt any...(On my List-O-Things to learn how to do..he he)...But since "Time" was kinda a problem at the moment I had decided to just do the Build-Up Wing for now and try a set of foam core's later...

Dunno how to Thank You on this one?? Actually...Ck P.M's...

I just wanted to quick post a pic of the "Semi Kit"...I will try and spread it out and get some better shots...But here is a shot of the bundle so to speak...It includes the Lazer Cut wood and the Rolled set of drawings you see...The Foam you can see in the this pic and any other items besides the bundle are for other projects..Sorry for the lame pic and I will try to get some better ones soon...

Have Fun!!

Chuck:
I also have one of these on order, Bill is having trouble with plywood, but said mine should be in the mail by next week! Cannot wait. I'd also like a build thread and will add pictures of my own. I'm lucky enough to live in Tucson and know Bill Hemple (original Curare design and kitter). So I have great access to Bill for questions. FYI, he has been toying with kitting up the originals again with foam cores. Problem is he is very busy with many projects and supporting Bill Jr.

Excellent!! Please do add to the build thread!!

I came across an old thread a long time ago...I bookmarked it..he he:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_46...tm.htm#4619185

I read a bit in that thread where they were talking about throwing away the Curare, Arrow and Majic Molds...I was like Noooooooo!!

So Bill Hemple Sr. is the Hobby Barn dude huh....Yeah..I can see where he may be busy...he he

I hope he doesn't/didn't throw the molds away...

Anyhow..I look forward to your input on the Curare build!! I my need your help along the way..he he

Have Fun...

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

Hey Chuck,

Talking about Webra, the oldies still work fantastical ( I have about 4 of them )
Going from the blackhead to the speed and the 'magic type', with the exhaust behind the cylinder [8D].
The blackhead can get a Phantom topp model in the air, but once the speed drops....... you'll have to make a helicopter landing.... running a 10 x 8 , which is ofcourse, looking to it's + 4kg weight to small, unfortunately can't get a bigger propeller on it, even with the 10 x 8 it's a lawnmower :D
Man I'm curious to get the rear exhaust running in a Magic :)

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

Still waiting on UPS, but in the mean time, I saw an add for electric retracts about a month or 2 ago and now I cannot find it (magazines) or on the web. They were servo/retract in one unit, just screw them in & connect both to gear channel via Y cable. If anyone has seen these or knows who the manufacturer is please let me know.

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

FYI, I've been flying for 5 years and have been doing some competetion in IMAC, but I really want to fly pattern, that's why I chose the Curare to build. But I'm not familiar with these planes. Hence the question about retracts (which I've never seen work well on other planes). My next question is, since I don't plan to hover the Curare, I assumed an OS61 would work well, but what about the new OS ringed 75? it's supposed to fit the same as a 61. I have several 3D practice planes that I had OS1.08s in, I converted to the new OS120. except for weight, I was not impressed, increase in HP was neglegible.
I ordered the Curare with 1/4" sides as suggested for additonal engine power, but I don't want to squeeze things in.
I also have no experience with tuned pipes, but willing to learn. Is there a tuned pipe for the 61?, who has them, does the Curare have room for a tunnel or would it have to run outside?

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

I'm not sure on the combination retract/servos...That sounds kinda interesting...Hopefully someone can come up with a link...

I always heard "Horror Stories" about retracts also...But I've never had a problem albiet with smaller planes...These 60 size guys will be larger but I don't anticipate any problems...I think if you get halfway decent quality components...Then you do a nice job during construction and spend a little time Rigging them correctly..They should be pretty sweet...

I don't know about larger displacement engines...The Curare will be new to me also...My personal idea is to kinda build it "representative" of it's time...I'll be doing a .61 with a pipe...It may be a YS for starters as I'm out of money..he he...But I'd like to eventually get one of those Webra Speed 61's!!

There should be tuned pipes available for most 60 sized engines...Macs Products is a pretty decent option for most applications...I think they pretty much cover most every mainstream engines out there...There are also some custom guys out there...As well as some Carbon Fiber pipes I'm sure you've seen....

Tuning isn't too bad...It requires a bit of time on the test stand...But typically when your done your done...Unless you radically change props and then you may have to re-tune a bit...Just my opinion...there is some pretty good tuning info on Macs website as well as various other sources for some engine specific info...Doing a little reading will probably save a bit of time...

You may also do a search of the RCU forums once you've selected you engine and may be able to get some tuning info that way...There are allot of Very Knowledgable guys that hang out here...

Have Fun...

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

DJR1007 I am currently scratch building a Curare from the MAN planes. Pretty close to done. I built and flew one just like it back in the 70's. What a nice plane.

As far as retracts are concerned, I would recommend Spring Airs. The are easy to install and work well and no linkages required like mechanical retracts. I used Rhoms Airs back in the 70's and 80's and never had problems.

As far as power is concerned the plane will fly great with a piped 60. I am using a Jett Fire 90 rear exhaust with a pipe on mine. The OS 75 may be okay without a pipe. I would tend to a higher pitch prop such as an 11x8 or 9. OS has a .91 that fits the 60 holes also I believe.

Navnav2002, that YS 60 will out run that Webra with no trouble. I used YS 60's in the 90's. A very strong engine! Wish I still had one.

I would recommend the flaps. They work great.

Good luck with your projects.

You dont mean the Giezendanner system? Electrically driven retrcacts, very reliable

sorry didn“t find english page

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

Speed-Panzer, I don't think these are the same. System I saw looked much less complicated.
Thanks for everyone else's input, very helpful. I was infact looking at the OS61/macs pipe today. Pretty sure that's the way I'll go. I'm wondering though, I saw the Webra speed 61 online for about $169, that's a lot cheaper than a YS, though I love them, I have 4 of the YS110s running on U-Can-Dos & Show times.
I did get my kit today, and went to Kinko's for copies of the plans. Hope to have the shop cleaned up from current project and the Curare started by next weekend. I'll start posting pictures then.
Thanks Everyone!

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

Hey djr1007..

There is a used but appears to be in nice condition YS .60 with pipe and header in the RCU Marketplace...(He lists it as a 61 but it's a 60..Round Head)..
http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=298168

There is also this one...It looks nice as well...He's a good bit higher in price...I think it's pretty close to new:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=297987

(P.S...I'm not afilliated with either of these folks..he he..I just happen to keep an eye out for YS 45/60/61 engines..An obsession I suppose...lol )

I believe parts are pretty tough to come by for those 60's...You can still find Diaphrams, Gaskets and O-Rings ect as they are interchangeable with the 45...But Hard parts are pretty non existant from what I understand...

I have a few of the YS .61 (Square Head) Engines...They are powerful...The only reason I wanted to get a Webra is to keep it like Hanno's "origional" Curare I've seen photos of...I actually have a NIB YS 61 Side Exhaust I bought specifically for the Curare project...I just found the Webra Speed 61 is available "Brand New" and it still looks like the "Old School" varient...So I've started thinking about that one..he he

That Enya Engine listed in another thread around here looks pretty neat also!! That may be worth a look??

Have Fun...

It's a "spin off" of the MAN plans...Or maybe a better way to say it is...It's a Cleaned Up version of the MAN drawings...Apparently some errors were fixed...It has a build up wing...

Hope that Helps...

RE: Curare Semi Kit..

Thanks for the info Chuck.

I have started a MAN Curare build http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_51..._1/key_/tm.htm but got side tracked building and painting Black Magics since I started. I also got the MK Curare plans off the list here. I need to finish my build Curare for the huntsville meet and could use the parts in the semi-kit. Thinking I'll order one after nats. thanks.
