BlueJay Models Dirty Birdy

Just wondering if anyone has heard any news about BlueJay Models. I would like to order a Dirty Birdy kit for SPA, but their web-site shows the kit "Temporarily Out of Stock". I've sent an e-mail and left a voice mail asking when the kit would be available again, but they don't answer. I don't mind waiting for them to poduce the kit, but the least they could do is let me know if they will be producing the kit.

I'm debating between the King Altair and the Dirty Birdy. I've had several Kaos's and would like to have the Dirty Birdy. If I can't get the kit I'll go with the King Altair. Actually I would still get the King Altair if I get the Dirty Birdy. Can't have too many planes. LOL

The emailed me about a month and a half or so ago and said they hoped to have the dirty birdy kits in within 90 days.

Hopefully this is a small company which has been swamped with orders due to the recent MA article.

I built one last year. It's a fantastic airplane and the kit was superb. There was a thread about 2 - 3 months back about it being out of stock and it seems like the answer back then was also 90 days. I was looking at their site again a few days ago. More and more of their kits are showing discontinued.

I hope they get more kits in. I love mine and would like to get another while they're around.

I would buy the wing and stab cores from Dynamic Balsa. They're only $27 and $15 respectively:

http://www.dbalsa.com/

The DB fuse is built almost exactly like the Super Kaos with the slab top and sheet sides; it's very quick and easy to build from the plans. You don't need a kit for the fuselage. You could actually put this foam wing version together faster than the built-up Bluejay kit. And, it would even cost less. Tower Hobbies still sells the DB canopy, too:

Please note that the Tower canopy is curved to fit a curved fuselage not the balsa slab side construction you mention. Certainly it can be trimmed to fit a flat surface though.

I talked to them a couple of days ago and was told that the DB kits are about 60 days out.

The Dirty Birdy has a curved fuselage top - which is shaped from a slab top. It uses the same exact fuselage construction method as the Kaos series. So does the UFO. And, the GP canopy does fit the Dirty Birdy and UFO perfectly. I know because I am using one.:D

If having one soon is a priority, just order the plans from RCM and scratchbuild one. It is a simple build and that feels even better than building from a kit... If you go the plans route, there is also the UFO as done magnificently by Rainedave in his build thread. I had this same go around with Bluejay on the XLT kits last summer. They were listed as temporarily out of stock and I was told new kits available by late July/early August 2006. They are STILL out of stock and look like never coming back...

I too have been inquiring about the Bluejay kits since last Fall. The DB foam wings and scratchbuild fuse sounds like a good route to go.

Were you the guy who criticized my DB for not being shaped well enough when I posted a picture of it? :(

Hey, my DB came from an original Bridi kit and came with a canopy that was intended for a flat surface right in the box. The Tower is not the same. [:'(]

I don't have a dog in this fight other than to warn people that the Tower isn't what Bridi supplied. Will it work? Yea sure, but you have to adjust.

. . .and IF I do another DB it will be more shapely. :D Sorry to offend the purists with my lazy rendition.

Hi Stripes. No, that wasn't me. I've never intentionally criticized anyone who builds; I've only commended and praised other's work on these forums. And, I'm by no means a purist, either. I actually find it surprising that anyone in this forum would criticize your's or anyone else's work. Everyone around here is so supportive and helpful! In fact, it's a haven for builders. It's too bad that it happened. BTW, I don't remember seeing your finished Troublemaker. Did you post more photos of it? Thanks,

David

Dave's right about the guys here, and I say, lets Build,Build,Build!!:D I'm not sure what I enjoy more, building or flying;)

Well there is a good and simple reason for that. It isn't finished yet. I'm getting static from the guys at my flying field for being slow on this project, but, well all I can say is that progress is taking place although it is slow. That tends to happen when I'm not all that happy with the way things are going. The thing is nose heavy and I'm having to put a lot of radio gear to the rear.

The Dirty Birdy is an easier build.

Thought you all might be interested. Here is an original Dirty Birdy built from the glass/foam kit. Just finished it. It has the old Kraft electric retracts as well. I had the K&B .61 for it, but it was too unrealiable in another plane, so the Dirty Birdy got a new OS .61 FS.

Love your smile, a Bridi design will do that. Not so sure about those power lines on the other side of your field though, they look to be about the line of the pattern maneuvers... Anyone strained one through them?

Oh yeah, the powelines. We try not to think about them. It keeps you staight on patterns though!! Ever so often someone has to "shoot the lines" deadstick or hits one. In Orange County, not many places to put a field, so we live with it.

She flys "heavy", beacause she is. Lots of epoxy and resin to help "retore" the kit from 35 years ago. It was very brittle. The OS 61 pulls it well around the sky, the landings are always interesting. She drops like a brick onto the runway. No bouncing here!! I thought about trying flaperons to get more lift. With only 4 flights so far, still trying to trim her out. See the pictures of the holes I had to fill.

if anybody is interested, I just got a Dirty Birdy kit that I ordered from Blue Jay last week. Prompt service and quick arrival at my door step. Kit looks good and will make a nice winter build.

I'll go so far as to say that I doubt if any two renditions of Joe's own models of the same design were ever identical, know whatta mean, Vern?

Rainedave is a good guy, fer sure.

I'm still trying to figure out a canopy "designed for a flat surface" ....as opposed to round.

What'd I miss here ?

NM2K 01-21-2008 02:07 PM

RE: BlueJay Models Dirty Birdy

Nothing. Different renderings from different manufacturers. Some folks probably aren't aware of the older flat top Bridi versions.

Most aren't aware that this is what made Joe's models so popular. They were acceptable square boxes. Of course, the fact that they were never really competitive in the top classes never seems to bother anyone...<G>
