OS58 1965 Model - HELP!
Hi All,
I hope there might be an OS58 owner out there! I've just acquired one of these second hand and need help getting it apart for cleaning. I have the head and backplate off, also the cylinder liner is out. I cannot however, get the piston/rod assy out of the case. The case is two piece with the lower case being a casting and the finned barrel being turned. How is the barrel fitted to the lower case? Pressed in or threaded? I am pretty sure they must be able to be separated from each other as otherwise, there's no way the rod/piston assy can be removed? Can anyone help? While I'm at it, does anyone have an old "Jetstream" type muffler they'd be prepared to part with? Thanks in advance to all, DerFly http://www.osengines.com/history/osm...5-max-58rc.jpg |
RE: OS58 1965 Model - HELP!
I'm not familiar with this motor but alot of times there is build up on the wrist pin not allowing the rod to slide back and forth, some types of carburator spray cleaner have been useful getting the gunk off the wrist pin it takes some amount off repeated application and working the rod back and forth to get the rod completely free on the pin witch should on most engines allow you to get the rod off the crank.

Hi DerFly, I recently restored two of the .50's which are exactly the same as the .58 except for internal displacement.
The finned cylinder simply sits on the lower case on a paper gasket. It is not screwed in. It is the gasket that has "glued" the two parts together due to heat and castor oil. You will more than likely destroy the paper gasket when separating the two parts of the case. No big deal, I replaced mine with thin automotive gasket material. Be very, very careful with the front bearing!!! It is most certainly a roller pin bearing of unusual dimensions: 13mm ID x 18mm OD. You will not be able to find a replacement from places like Boca or RC Bearings. Here is my thread with photos of one of my restorations: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_61...tm.htm#6166814 My .50's are fantastic runners. I have one in my Senior Falcon. I'm sure the .58 is only more powerful. I have an extra prop drive if you need it. It, too, is an "oddball" part that is difficult to track down. David |

David,
Many thanks for the information and warnings. It's exactly what I needed to know. I'll post pictures when I'm done. DerFly BTW, does the 50 have a two ring piston also? |

My .50's have single conventional rings. BTW, Frank Bowman can supply you with any rings you will ever need. I have purchased several from him. The man is one of those rare and true treasures in our hobby; a first rate product at an amazing price. He lists the .58 as being in stock:
