Classic and vintage pattern is where it's at!!!

If you compare the number of posts in the Classic pattern section to those in the other pattern section it looks like Classic and Vintage pattern is really catching on. The posts in Classic are almost 2 to 1. Maybe we are all getting older and returning to where we started in RC. I'm just finishing a vintage Daddy Rabbit from the 1967 plans and plan to do the Kraft Slik-Fly next. Jim

Hey Jim your right!! I started flying pattern in 1975 when I was about 12 . Something about the Classic designs that really gets me going!! Maybe because they bring you right back to a care free time when all we had to worry about was having fun!!! lol. Right now I have a original Kwik Fli and a Perigee both all set up and ready to fly.

after taking a 12 or so yr break from the hobby i was amazed when i saw a 40 -50% aerobatic plane hovering at our club. the term 3D did not exist in the early 90's when i left the hobby. however, i have no interest in 3d other than on my simulator sharpening my control responses. i have a large extra 300 arf that i love to fly and a warbird i am building but the classic pattern planes beauty has me hooked. i hang out here on this forum and see the same people talking about the same problem i have. we love the simplicity and beauty of these planes. i can't wait to attend a SPA/BPA event.

I haven't been this excited about flying for years! I used help my Father build his pattern ships and I called for him when he flew pattern from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. I just loved the sleek designs of the pattern ships from that era. I also got to meet a lot of the icons from then and was a pit brat for some. Now that my Father is gone, Classic Pattern helps me relive those good times. Besides, ARFs have gotten pretty boring. While there are some very nice planes out there, IMO, nothings matches the thrill of a model taking to the air that YOU built from a pile of sticks, blocks & sheet. A great sense of accomplishment in my book!

There has been more activity in the “Classic Pattern” forum than the “Pattern” forum for quite awhile. We started the separate “Classic Pattern” forum back in June of 2006 because the “Classic” post were getting mixed in with the “Pattern” forum and it was difficult to find what you wanted. As I predicted the interest level in the “Classic” forum has been amazing.

Yep, growing up in the hobby with free flight and controline, calling for dad in the old Class A,B,C contests and then starting RC myself after high school in 79, it's great to play with the classic designs now- simple and great fliers. Brings back great memories with all the same challenges, maybe even more so without the huge selection of kits we used to have. Surprising how fun it is re-reading all the old pattern columns and build articles from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I appreciate all the authors that took the time to do that- Lowe, Hanson, Pappas, Van Putte, Lee, Ellison, Helms, and more I'm not aware of...all helped bring pattern to remote parts of the country where only one or two fliers existed. Current mags are missing most of that so now we get our fix here...:D

just a thought on current magazines, especially the one we all receive, you can find monthly columns on control line scale, control line combat, control line speed, free flight this, free flight that, micro this, micro that but not one monthly column on pattern. i don't know about you but i've been to more rc club sites that i can count (starting about 1980), i've been a member of 3 clubs and i have never seen a control line plane in action. micro flyer? i've seen more kids flying $15 styrofoam hobby flyers at our club in 1 afternoon than i've ever seen of micro flyers. 3/4ths of our monthly magazine is unreadable. i hate to dis control line but come on, 3 monthly columns on something i've never seen? please. give me this site and this forum and i'm happy.

RE: Classic and vintage pattern is where it's at!!!

Pattern planes are purpose built creations, this is why all the modern F3A planes are pretty much the same. But back in the sixties and seventies when the days of GG and Reeds were gone and reliable proportionals were here yielded some of the most beautiful and best flying aircraft ever. To think that we can take these beautiful designs and marry them to modern engines and computer radios is truly amazing.

Competition is still an intense thing no matter what you are doing. If you don't believe me just go to a sailboat race, model or big boat you will see. The desire to win is just as strong in an SPA contest as at the F3A level just less expensive. Following the build threads it seems like the antique class is catching on as well.

I for one hope that this SPA movement blossoms into a full nationwide craze. I want to fly those old designs again and maybe just maybe get a few more pieces of hardware to clutter up my shelves.

Peace

i can't wait to get a vintage pattern plane that i scratch built to our field. you can only tolerate so many 35 - 40 - 45% aerobatic planes before they all run together.

Right Marko - It may get bigger. Think of all the Baby Boomer's retiring, 10M in the next 6 years. If just a fraction of those guy's get into, or back into the hobby, and want to build what they used to look at, figure anyone born 1944-1950, they were teenager's watching propo radios that got reliable, and the birth of classic ships to fly pattern. They all ain't gonna play golf or fish.

A lot of pattern plane design's were a take-off of the Kazmirski Taurus, just updated.

Here are some planes that I built around 1976. Kaos 40 and 60 and a Sig Kiwi. I was only 13 at the time. I think I could build and fly better back then than I do now!!! lol.

It is amazing how busy the “Classic” forum is getting. When I log on there are often new post being made faster than I can read them before there are more new post.

Thanks, I really got into it back then!! There was a guy in my club that would build planes so perfect that they look like they came out of a mold so I was trying to keep up with him. I put out everything I had to do a good job!!

All the old birds are gone, wish I still had them now. I found an original Glen Spickler Quickie Sport im working on not really pattern but I had that one when I was a kid, also I found an original Midwest Mach 1 kit, some parts are missing but most of it is there, will start that one soon.

You are so right. It is a sad testament to todays "culture". We hire kids where I work for assembly, etc. and they cannot use their hands for anything. Except maybe twiddling an x-box or a text message. They have no tangible skill.

Back in our day, it was common for young folk to build models, etc. Nowadays, it seems as though basic skill are "exotic" topics for internet forums.

A society that does not produce real goods is doomed to a slow death, as all things become made in china.

Sorry, didn't mean to be a bummer. Just my observations. Long live Classic Pattern!!!

I love the old pattern planes. MUCH more then I do these 3-D birds that are flying now. I just finished a Super Kaos and am finishing up a Contender now. That is for just bashing around and having fun. My big prize came in today by UPS. I just received a King Altair kit from Jeff at Home and Hobby Solutions and I must say it is the most beautiful kit I have ever seen. If this is a sample of his work, I'll sure be buying more of his kits. I started flying CL in the 50's and went to R/C in the middle 60's and love the old birds. The new ones just don't do anything for me, especially the ARF's. They are OK if you are in a hurry to get a plane in the air, but nothing is more satisfying then building one yourself. I'm just getting back into the hobby after a long break and I was dumb enough to sell everything I had, so I have to start over, but at least I haven't forgotten everything. I'll be starting the King Altair in a couple of weeks and really looking forward to it. Long live the old pattern planes.

AMEN!

I also got out of rc in '90 or so, and am now just getting back into it big time, although I built a Peppermint Pattie .15 about 5 yrs ago, and flew her maybe 2-3 times a year until now. I have not much interest in 3D, but finding SPA is like a breath of fresh air to me. The current turn-around doesn't interest me, either. I have not the time nor the money for that. Maybe 30 yrs ago I would have taken it up, as I did pattern at the time.

Now I want to fly SPA and BPA like I used to. Blue Angels air show style. Nothing prettier.
