Kirkland Nutcracker Pattern Plane
 

Does anyone have an information on the Kirkland Nutcracker?
I obtained a copy of the plan that was included in the Airborne Associates kit.
From that I am going to build the airplane but I would appreciate any further information.
The only photo I have is from an online scanned copy of a Steve Helms review of the Airborne Associates kit.
If anyone has a kit - an actual plane - or any info at all it will help me to get the model built properly.

I flew a couple or three of them back when they were available from Airborne. I probably have some pictures somewhere but no pieces left. They were really good planes for the time. The best of Kirklands IMO. George Hill (Airborne owner) & I experimented with a couple of them by lengthing the nose, changing the wing plan somewhat, anhedral stab, etc. but I'm not sure we improved the plane as Jim designed it. It was fun to try different stuff though.

This is the article I found on the web.
As I mentioned a fellow SPA member sent me a copy of the Airborne plans.
I will have no trouble redesigning the plane from them as to planform and aerodynamics,
but to make it true to the original it would be nice to see a few photos.

I to flew a Nutcracker. Great looking plane for the day. I flew in the Missouri/Illinois area and never saw another.
I am with you, if anymore info is available, I'd like to see it also.

Thanks for posting the review. I never had one but I've always liked
the looks of the Nutcracker. Would you know what year the articel was
written? Maybe you should change the subject of this thread or just add
the name, you might pull in someone who has more info/photos. I would
like to see more info/photos also.

No, but the Airborne Associates kit for the Nutcracker, with foam wings and glass fuselage, was introduced in mid 1973 for $59.95.

Ron,

My info came from a Toledo show report and the only photograph was the little tiny one shown below. I know there are better shots around as I remember at the time thinking what an attractive design it was but no way could I afford it - as you say, big money!

I agree that sceptreac should change the thread title to attract more passing trade. Someone will have better shots.

This is one of my projects for 2008. I have started on the plans but have a long way to go. I built one and flew it back in 73 or 74 but sold it to a better flyer, back when I lived near Chicago. My current project is the Kirkland A-6 Intruder.

I remember a couple of guys in the R/C Propbusters club had Kirkland Nutcrackers back in the seventies. We used to have a pattern/scale contest in Waterford, CT in the seventies. Back then the contests in the northeast almost always had pattern combined with standoff scale. I remember a few guys using the Top Flite Mustang or Warhawk in both scale and A or B pattern.
Kirkland's Nutcracker was a good flying ship with the Tiger Bluehead or Webra Blackhead on a muffler. The local hobby shop man still has a couple of builtup Nutcrackers in his Perhaps I can talk him into taking one down and get some pics in the future.

It is great to see the responses to this subject.
I will dig out my plans after I finish my move to Seattle and will provide them to anyone ( Jeff ) who would like a copy.
I move on March 5th so it will be after that.
It will really great if Mark O. can get some photos.
Better yet maybe the owner would sell one of his so I could duplicate it easier.

craig, I will take you up on that offer of the plns when you get around to it!
I got to fly my Nutcracker one time at a contest before I planted it. I had won abest finish award with that plane too. It was all hand rubbed dope; was good looking plane.

Hello Everybody,

Could one of you point me in the right direction on how to post pictures? A few years back their was a thread with step by step instruction, but I can't find anything. Probably right under my nose.

I have two Nutcracker kits. Both, appear to be Skyglass kits. Both I came across a few years back. One on Eb, and one hanging in a hobby shop. My first Nutcracker was an Airborne kit and has long since been retired. I probably still have pictures of it somewhere.

If I can be of any help, let me know

What ever happened to George Hill? He use to spend a lot of time under our tent.

All you have to do is click on "reply" at the top of the last post. At the bottom of the reply page is a link "click here to upload images and files" Hope this helps
