D and L dalotel
 

:D I just finished building a D and L short kit of the 20% Dalotel. It is powered with an OS 91. Four Stroke. It flies like it's on rails and handles high wind as well. Unfortunately I have been told, though it was from the 70's that it is NOT an SPA legal plane. [:@] GO figure!!

i have heard that the dalotel is one of the best flying pattern planes there is. you certainly did an outstanding job on that one. i don't care a lot for the shape though. i still almost bought one recently.

What they need is a class for old TOC planes which I believe it was designed for. Maybe BPA could.

:D My intention was to build an 80-90 inch wing span gasser of this model. I just dont have the patience to scrounge up, enlarge the plans , and build it. If they made a kit I would buy it today. I believe Dick Hanson sold a large kit some years ago. I have looked for one for many years and not seen one for sale.

I'm not quite sure how a scale r/c model designed in the 60's and flown at the full scale 1970 World Aerobatics Championships isn't SPA legal..... I'd be interested in the call on that one myself. It would certainly be welcome at any BPA contest... and, as for that Hanson Dalotel...huuummm...wonder who has one of those??????

Hi Skip, according to this link, the real thing was first flown in 1969. No telling when it was designed

Looks like you did a fine job on your Dalotel. Is the stab built-up with an airfoil or is it a flat sheet balsa?

Yeah, I'm reading this and yeah... I've got one of Dick's Dalotel kits. This is the one from the '90s (originally powered with a ST 2300; 72" long with a span of 78"). he first kitted the Dalotel as a .60 sized pattern ship back in '83-'84 for the 'NEW' turnaround sequence. Chip Hyde won the nats with one ('84 I think).
The newer, larger Dalotel also has an all wood (ok, there's a little foam in it, too) fuselage. Like the Excess, the Dalotel has a relatively large fuselage, but Dick always was ahead of his time :). Unfortunately. like his other kits, this does not come with full size plans (maybe just an instruction booklet - I haven't looked in a while). I'm sure plans could be drawn from the kit (it's on my never ending list of modeling things to do...).
As for SPA legal...? I agree with Dan, it sure should be. Maybe somebody can do a plans search and find one that was designed before 1976. I think Hanno showed up at the TOC with a Dalotel in the late '70s (powered with twin, geared 90s as I recall). That reminds me, I also have the Bridi kit of Hanno's TOC winning Dalotel. I'll check the date on the plans...

Pretty funny..... I thought You had the big Dalotel.. but... I've got the .60 sized version!......beautiful kit w/lightened wings. Might have to do something with that bird!!
