Thinking about returning to Pattern

Hello all, I currently fly IMAC, but I flew pattern in the pre-turn around days. I had a Yoshioka Dash-5, 60 size. (Loved that plane, should have never sold it.) Anyway, I'm way behind the 8-ball on what is happening in the pattern world these days, and I would like to try my hand at it again. Where do I begin? I saw a kit from homeandhobbysolutions.com, it was a King Altair, looked pretty nice, I'm sure there are tons of pattern planes out there, but right now I have to find the rules and the manuvers for Classic Pattern. Also, is there anyone in the San Diego area that flys classic pattern? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Ken

Welcome back Ken! What's old is new again! As you have noticed, there are a few choices for Classic Pattern ships. The current production run for the King Altair is sold out. Check with Jeff for furture availability. Also, check out Eureka Aircraft (eurekaaircraft.com), they have kits/short kits of some popular designs.

Take a look at seniorpattern.com (Senior Pattern Association) for the list of SPA legal ships and the current maneuver list. Have fun!

Welcome Back!

For the rules and maneuvers currently in use in SPA, try the website www.seniorpattern.com. As far as kits go, there are some suppliers and more are being added monthly. This forum is a good place to search for them - just use the search button to look throughout this forum. There are some threads where current suppliers are listed.

Right On..Welcome back!!

If you would like to possibly replace your Dash 5 you could check with Singapore Hobbies...A fellow from these forums was just over there and I saw a Dash5 kit sitting on the shelve in some of his photos...

BTW..You have a neighbor there in Chula Vista you should hook up with and do some flyin' (70s Flyer)...He's got some of the premiere kits in the world....His stash of aircraft is growing almost daily... Were planning a raid on his "Airplane Room" if we can figure a way around his security system... :D

Ken,
Here's a site that might give you that extra push you need to get back into the hobby.

If you have any pictures you would like to see included here, please let me know.

Well, I think I found a plane - turns out one of my IMAC team members has a Jeykll with a YS 120 4 stroke supercharged and a Hatori pipe. Servos are a bit outdated, retracts work fine, I'm just curious if supercharged engines are still legal for pattern. I would like to fly the current pattern as well as some classic pattern. What is the best fuel to run in this engine, and what is the best thing for an after-run oil? I don't want to buy a plane and find out it's not legal anymore. Thanks

The Jekyll will be legal for current pattern, the YS is fine (they are up to a 1.70 now). It will fly pretty fast by current standards and be hard to keep in the box for turnaround maneuvers, but it will be fine for getting your feet wet again. The Jekyll isn't SPA legal but will be OK in BPA events if there are any in your area.

It shouldn't be that difficult to keep in the box. I've flown a couple of the modern schedules with two faster "classic" models and it wasn't so bad. Granted, the sequence was faster. Nothing uncontrollable though.

I flew the plane today and it wasn't as fast as I thought it would be. I don't forsee any problems keeping it in the box, I'm already used to that from IMAC. I'm going to go ahead and buy it. My friend actually said that as long as I don't whack it or damage anything, I can change my mind within 30 days and he'll take it back and give me a refund, but I don't think I'm going to change my mind. I'm just curious what people are using for after-run oil in the YS 120AC engine, any help there would be appreciated.

Once I get the Spektrum radio in it and some nice digital servos, I really feel like this plane will be one sweet bird. The plane and engine are 23 years old, but you would never know it, unlimited vertical and tracks like it's on rails.

I really want to take care of that engine, that's my biggest concern right now.

Thanks everyone.

Congrats...Jekyll...Kewl!!

My recommendation for after run oil:
http://www.pspec.com/details.asp?ProdID=40&category=7

The main thing is no petroleum based products in your YS as it will wreak havoc on the silicone diaphragm and o-rings...

I've heard of others using the lowest viscosity Mobile1 synthetic motor oil as after run oil also...I've never used it personally...There are a couple other threads lingering around here with more comments about Mobile1....

Good news: your Jekyll and YS 1.20 (SF or AC?) aren't as old as you think, but only by 4-5 years. Could be even 'younger' ;)

I also use the "Ultra Oil" from Performance Specialties. I used Mobil 1 Synthetic for a year (and it worked fine), but navav2002 talked me into it last year.

I have never flown a Jekyll even though I have 1 in kit form and another that needs repainting.Any comparisons to other aircraft? I just may have to jump on the band wagon.

I ended up with a Jekyll also, but it don't look like that!! That is VERY nice. I'm going to have to be a copy cat on this one. I love that color scheme on that plane.
