Foam Core Wing Question
 

Any one adding carbon liminates for spars in there foam core wings?.If so what type and size.Did'nt add any on my tipo I just finished,just used some heavy glass colth about 4 inch wide and 3\32 sheeting.Hope it holds up cause it sure snap rolls nice.The Mach 1 I'm working on has 1\16 sheeting and was thinking maybe some carbon fiber would help,the tipo got a little heavy with the 3\32 sheeting.

Back in the 70's we didn't have carbon fiber and we used 1/16" sheeting with no reinforcement. We generally glassed the wings with 3/4 oz. fabric too.

I am finishing a scratch Curare with 1/16" balsa sheeting which was pretty light so I used some 3.7 oz. uni carbon, 2 strips top and bottom and I glassed the wing with .5 oz. fabric.

I would say if you use 6-8 lb. 1/16" balsa, you don't need reinforcement except at the center section. If you use 4-6 lb. contest balsa with no glass, I would put something in there if monokoting.

Hello,

I'm building several planes for people and for myself it is all 1/16 contest grade balsa (4-6#) wood with a .007 x 1/2 wide carbon tape between the skin and foam.. using the New NANO polyglue from Elmers in a vac bag for 4 hours and out and ready to work on.. On the one piece wings I use some 2 oz cloth in the center section to the fuse sides to give a nice surface to sit on.. Plug in wings no cloth, just a carbon strip.. just becareful monokoting since the wood is so soft.. Never had a wing failure..
Planes flown in AMA and SPA...
