I found this picture in RCU some monts ago.. what plane is this? And, when I could get the plans to build it?

To me, it looks like Dick Sarpoulas' (sp?) Hammer 20, with a .40 or larger engine mounted in the nose.

It is a Peppermint Pattie .15, the builder decided to "change" a few things, like not use mid-wing, change the rudder, etc. He posted this photo in one of the PP threads.

RE: name the plane

Wow it's mine..(and I flew it last weekend!)....Yes it is a "peppermint pattie"...the wing was moved down due to the landing gear (as I remember I built it when I was a jr in high school). What we did was cut some foam wings (think I still have the aluminum forms somewhere)...put in some landing gear blocks in the foam wings...mounted the engine with a mount and drilled a nosegear mount in it....and finished it out! It started out with a .15 fox (ick) well it was painted and a bit heavy...then it got the "Royal .28" treatment"...which was a really nice combo...well I got older and wilder...(put a os 25 in it...)...wore out the Royal .28....and then I forgot about it until I got to talking to wedj......

well to make a long story short...My transmitter got stolen out of the car..."sigh ..look for a 9303 on mode 1 for me "IT IS STOLEN"....got the 8303 out and well the peppermint was the only one in there so I said I am going flying...it is a "rocket" with the 25...way too much power (but I LOVED IT)...talk about ballistic...wooooooooHOOOOOOOOOOOOO...but remember....the plane was designed with a baffle fox .15 on it....(which flys it fine without the extra drag of the gear)...well you have a "gear" it is just a "mono gear".....Oh (BTW)...the os is getting a "Pipe"........! woooooooohoooooooooo.! I gotta pass everyone...(LOL)...d

It is truely a great plane Wedj! Moving the wing did not change the roll coupling...the wing was "thin" well mine still is...(Oh btw the plane was built in about 1980)...28 yrs old (wow is that balsa kiln dried)....well it didn't blow apart and I had "fun" last weekend so all is well....

I can take some more pics of the plane if you want to modify one of the "kits" that are being produced again...(geese I might even build one)....

Thanks. I am amazed at the interest in the PP these days.

I think electrics helped bring small planes back into vogue.

They were never out of vogue with me. I just didn't get around to building and flying them. Had I known how things were going to turn out in life...

RE: name the plane

Oh...and yep the peppermint was "kit bashed" a bit (sorry WEDJ)...but Wedj pretty much has it right...(it was a few planes ago that we built em). The wing was moved down, the gear added, and a ventral fin/added lower rudder area was added). It is a good pattern plane...with the weight increase (well k&b epoxy on the fus) has increased the stall speed (ie landing speed a bit)...but it is not a killer deal. I am sure that the original flys fine with a .15 (actually is probably pretty fast)...when I had the .20 sized os on it it actually flew pretty good.....so to be honest the Royal .28 and the Os .25 (the os having more POWER)...are a bit of an overkill....and probably way different than WedJ had in mind when he designed it....(but it is FUN!...and will be even greater when I get the pipe on her!) The built up tail section was what I was always worried about (and it is basically stock except for the added area in the lower fin area) and to be honest it is strong enough...even with the added power so it should be ok with "normal" powerplants.

The "pointy" spinner (K&B from the 60's man...groovy) was something I acquired in a load of old junk the wife bought at a rc auction...(I think it makes the plane look "mean"!). If anyone knows what this spinner was used for I would love to know. I am thinking 60's pylon or something.

If anyone really wants the dimensions of the "modified peppermint" I can at least measure some stuff for ya...but the rough mods are given above.

You really created a great design, Nick. There were other smaller low wing sport planes around, even back then, but none of them had "It". PP has It.

I remember cramming my Ace Bantam Midget servos in there along with an Ace Commander 7 channel receiver and a 100 mah battery pack. One had to recharge that tiny battery before every flight, but it was worth it.

My PP was definitely the best exhibition aerobatics model that I have ever flown, if the gauge you are using is audience reaction. One fellow in the club, upon seeing PP emerge from my station wagon, would begin cursing to himself and immediately packing up to leave the field.

Keep in mind that I never over flew the pits, always kept the model at least 50' away and never let it approach the pit area head on at high speed. What got to my old pardner was the God-awful noise that PP made when performing high speed Lomcevaks. It looked and sounded like Armageddon when that 100 mph plus model tumbled end over end. Bunky just couldn't take it, for one reason or another.

I still smile today when I think of it. After a while, once I realized that it really got on his nerves (post traumatic stress syndrome? Korean War?), I wouldn't do the Lomcevak maneuver when Bunky was around. No one else had a problem with it and some of the kids of other modelers used to plead with me to do nothing but Lomcevaks.
