The kits has been long out of production. Occassionally you see one on ebay for US$400+

Scratch building one is the way to go.

I built my Mach I from the old Midwest plans. Purchased the foam cores for the wing and stab. Modified it slightly to be a tail dragger. Power is an OS 61FSR turning an 11x7. All up weight is 7lbs 6 oz. I compete with this aircraft in SPA competitions. It is a great flier.

Yes Nice one....turning it into a tail dragger is a great way to keep the weight down and improve the prop clearance. I kept mine as a trike as I wanted to be true to Norm's original design but it worked out tricky with the .91 up front. Worth it in the end tho.

Wow, that looks great, makes me want to build one as well. My dad and I used to have an OS 61 FSR but could never get it to run correctly. After switching to a Webra Speed 61, problem solved.

Just found this thread and am new here. Figured I would add a picture of a Midwest Mach 1 I recently sold on ebay. I kept the other one I pictured which is a Cutlass Supreme,

I plan on getting back into flying summer 2008 after being away for 15 years.

Wow, the classic red and white color scheme, sure brings back a lot of memories, my dad had two in the 70's. A good friend of ours - Lawrence Lo - a pioneer pattern pilot in Hong Kong had 5 or 6 of them.

I like how your Mach 1 turned out. With that yellow and blue it looks right as a tail dragger.
What landing gear did you use? Would you have any flight shots? I have a half done Midwest
kit, I might just copy your tail dragger setup. For me the Mach 1 is still one of the best looking
60 size pattern ship of all times.

I'm sorry, I duplicated this pic on the color scheme thread with along with this info. Should have made just one post.

Dad's Mach 1 was different in that he carved a pine plug for the fuselage to make ABS plastic fuse halves. He had access to the molding process by helping part-time at Delta Products (Grand Junction, Co) on some early ARF's. Unfortunately it came out very tail heavy (due to the plastic fuse), so with all the lead in the nose and Hobby Poxy paint, I think it ended up around 9lbs. Flew very fast and straight, but I think the wing loading on this particular one was higher than he liked. jeff

The Mach 1 was the greatest plane ever flown. I had one and wish I still had it. I also had a Mach 8 and loved it too. Guess I'll have to start mine as soon as I get my King Altair finished.

The gear on my Mach I are from a .60 size Ugly Stick (Hangar 9) and the wheel pants are from a Citabria that a friend gave me. Sometimes you just have to use what you got lying around. BTW, the paint on the wings is a teal green. I think the blue canopy makes the green take a bluer tint.

Sorry, I don't have any flight pictures. For SPA competitions you cannot have retracts and I didn't want the drag of having three wheels hanging in the breeze so I chose the conventional gear configuration. I think the airplane flies better as a tail dragger. The only problem I encountered with the plane was getting it slowed down so it would land and stay on the ground. With little to no drag it wants to glide forever. I solved this issue be reflexing the ailerons on final approach. Raising the ailerons just a few degrees (with a corresponding mixing of up elevator) changes the angle of attack and results in higher induced drag slowing the airplane down nicely and making for smooth landings. SPA competitions grade landings so this is a good thing.

Is that legal in SPA? I believe that flaps are not allowed, but I don't know about using the ailerons as spoilers.

The SPA rules specify that flaps may be used if on the original aircraft. The idea being that you don't modify the control surfaces (add flaps, etc) that were on the original design. Since I am not modifying the control surfaces, but simply using the capabilities of a computer radio to aid in flight, I don't see a problem with it. I also use mixing to aid in knife edge, point rolls, etc. The same principles apply.

BTW, we will be hosting our 7th annual SPA contest in June this year. Our club is in Newport News, VA. Any chance you may want to participate?

We are planning on holding the SPA contest on 21 June 08. As soon as I get the Sanction paperwork back from AMA confirming the date I will post the details on RC Universe. Our club website is www.newportnewsrc.org We have a 400 x 75 paved runway centered on a 1000 x 200 mowed grass strip. You can land and takeoff just about any way you want.

I sure would like to make that SPA contest in June. The wife and kids want to do vacation out

Hi,

I had a Mach 1 in 1976-1977. My plane had a Rossi 60 with pipe and Goldberg rectractable landing gear. Radio used was EK-logictrol super pro 7 ch. I competed some with it, at age 16 1977 I was competing in Swedish F3A championship. Great fun. Here is a picture of my Mach 1. After this I built a Curare (designed by Hanno Prettner) that also flew beautifully, like Mach 1 did.

I have a very short clip on YouTube of my Mach1. I started it in 1976, but after moving countries, I only completed it in 2003. I have only done four flights on it, and decided to preserve it for display; the gear is too fragile for grass strips.
