RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Man , I really like the Tsunami , it looks like an Ultra Sport but less draggy :D.
You have done a really nice job there doxilia , and that color that you have on the last pic will make a nice contrast over the white ;) in my opinion . I'll follow this thread to see the final job and if possible the report about de maiden . :D Regards . |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hey SpeedBoy,
thanks for the kind words. Yup, she's definitely shaped like a torpedo, reason for which I allowed myself to post the thread in this forum. I'm glad you like the "pearl red". I had "royal blue" in mind as a wave metaphore but since I have none; pearl red it'll be! The contrast should be good as you say. Updates will follow in a few days. Maiden might, unfortunately, have to wait til the Spring given the rapidly approaching blistery weather in the Great White North! Then again, I've never considered skiis... (other than for my legs!) Cheers. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
I'm anxious to see that Tsunami finished :)
|
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
So am I! When's it going to be finished!?
...been moving a little slower these last few days - work and the new project. I'm almost done with the base cover (fuse missing) and bottom trim (wing done, stab not yet). I hope to get the fuse covered tonight and finish the stab trim. Then I can get to the top trim - a little more complex. After that, it should all be smooth sailing. I really enjoy the brains and muscle (radio & engine installation) part of the hobby - you can just feel the plane wanting to depart Terra Firma! More coming soon... |

Well,... I have some photos but I thought I wouldn't post them...
...just kidding! Almost got'ya guys though! First things first, Happy Halloween to all! Keep your toddlers from too much of that sweet stuff. I plan to feed mine castor oil doctored into their juice :). That should keep their bellies nice and stuffed! (I thought Nitro might be a little much [&:])! So we've got an "Alien Spiderman from Jupiter" and a "Cat Princess"; how's that for kids these days? In other news, and to keep all you avid thread followers peaked :D, the Japanese Tidal Wave no longer exhibits a spot of wood! Dunno about you, but I'm tickled pink! ...must be feeling a little giddy tonight. In any event, she's only half-way done (again@!?). More trim to come... this is just the beginning. What is it? 90% done, 90% to go... BTW, if you're wondering if the fuse is crooked (I would seeing those pics), luckily it's not! Just perspective. |

And a few more:
wing bottom trim and... "guess what's missing on this flying surface?" Rear views. A few details to be adjusted to the nose trim once the wing top trim is done. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
As I said before nice contrast [sm=thumbup.gif]. You really make me wish one of those kits :D .
Just curious , do you have planning to paint the canopy ??? |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Yup! Contrast should be good. Eyes in the sky will tell.
Excellent question SpeedBoy. Just so happens I was considering that today - I don't know about actual coloured paint, given I went to the trouble of painting the cockpit and finishing it to be "visible" but I thought a little tinge would do nicely. Problem is, I've never tinted a canopy before. I know it can be done with film, usually by splitting the canopy lengthwise but I'm not crazy about that system. An actual transparent "paint-on" tint would be ideal. Maybe someone on RCU can point me in the right direction. Have the lines got you wanting to build one? Well, just so happens they are still being produced. For $66 (quite amazing actually) + S&H you too can have one here: http://www.junorc.com/kits.html Hope you decide to pick one up! Saludos, David. |

Yesss , I would say do it :D , paint the canopy .
Personally I like to paint the canopys of my airplanes but I have used Comex brand (en aerosol ) I would not recommend to you use it as at first time , but , you can use a nice brand specially for this application "Pactra" and in your case probably this is what you are looking for http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCY44&P=ML "Window Tint Colored Paint" , these paints works really nice and easy to apply . David thanks for the link junorc , I bet I would order one one of these days but first I need to finish another kit that I've started :D. Just to share with you a couple of pics with painted canopys :D. Hector |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hector,
that's a nice pair of birds you've got there! Something along the lines of a prop powered (looks like Rossi to me) Bandit and a modified Ultra Sport perhaps? Great job on the Canopies. Is the US finished in paint throughout? Many thanks for the window tint tip. I have never tried Pactra paint before but I'll definitely give it a try. Is it as dark as the can cap leads you to believe or does it have a more "smoky" bronze tint ? That's what I'm ideally looking for. Also, although it would probably go on the inside of the canopy, is it also fuel proof? So what you are building at the moment? David. P.S. Just came back from a nice "Dia de los muertos" Mexican dinner - hot chocolate and excellent "pan muerto" included! Una familia de Chilangos por aca con su restaurant. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hi David ,
Thanks for the compliments about the airplanes , there is a Great Planes Patriot .40 and yes with Rossi .53 and Ultra Sport 40 stock without mods and YS .45 both with tuned pipe :D the Patriot is a real rocket , I like to modify the props reducing the airfoil in order to gain some speed , some folks don't believe on that fact but my tests and experience with it shows the oposite :D if you want to see it on flying take a look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRIbC7_8U_0 And yes the canopy of my US is throughout ( polychrome black ) . About the color of the Pactra can cap hmm..... I'm not sure if it is the real color but I think not because the others caps looks the same color even when there is another color paint , check this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...ctra&search=Go all the caps are in the same color IMO :). I have understood they are fuel proof [sm=thumbup.gif] . What I'm building at the momet ??? well..... as you can see I like the speed so.... now it's a Shrike 40 from Lanier wich I'm modifying a lot reducing its airfoil and fuse to reduce drag , I hope the airplane can fly if not .... I would have learned a new lesson " do it better next time " lol:D. But hey how about the progress on the Tsunami ??? I can't wait to see the final job :) P.D. Por lo que veo tuviste una cena riquisima el dia de muertos , si seƱor :D. Saludos |

Hector,
Ha! My hands are shaking! That is some insane speed! [:-] I sure hope that the Tsunami is no where close to that - 100 kph would do me fine! I think you might be needing to look into something like this next: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmbH1...eature=related Just put some wings on it and you could occasionally fly it like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFypn...eature=related Well..., what an interesting coincidence. I just picked up a new YS 45 FS today and was debating between it and the OS 46 FX for the Tsunami. The remote needle valves on some of the OS's bothers me some as they require major hacking of the fuse. I suppose they're better suited to cowled installations. In any case, it would be great if you could tell me a little about your pipe setup on the YS: size, header length, prop, glow plug, fuel, etc. I was thinking about going with a Mac's 7.5cc quiet pipe, 11x7 or 11x7-1/4 props, OS #8 plug, 10% nitro. Sound similar to your setup? BTW, what tach readings do you get on the piped YS? I've been taken up with work and family obligations lately - the usual. But I'm determined to finish the Tsunami by mid-month. I'm actually a little tired of playing with covering so I may switch gears and work on the radio/engine installation and finish the trim afterward. Hopefully the YS will arrive some time next week. I'm psyched! More coming soon! David. P.S. I also have a mini-pipe (see pic) which I'll test on the YS/OS 45's but I suspect I'll end up going with a full pipe. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hey David better decision couldn't have been taken , good for the YS 45 you will love it [sm=thumbs_up.gif].
Ok , this is my setup on the YS 45 Header length ===> 4-1/4 " ( from glow plug to the end of the header ) Glow plug ======> O.S. R5 Fuel =========> Power Master 10 % Prop =========> 10x7 APC RPM =========> 15,000 Pipe =========> 7.5 cc quiet pipe (Macs) Just as a reference YS factory recommend you use 20% nitro and says that YS engines are designed to use tuned pipes system for a better performance that is completely correct , but when I did the break in I used 10% nitro and I've never changed the fuel "probably" due that the engine is running ok .... the engine is running with lack of nitro though and it seems that I'm the only on the field who can use 10% , the rest of the people just can't use 10 % with good results , they NEED to use 20% nitro or the engine doesn't run properly . Take this on consideration , this engine is plaintiff of nitro ;). Just other thing to keep on mind if you will end up with full pipe wich I really recommend you :D is my header's length was tunned for a 10x7 prop , if you are going to use 11x7 the measurement might be longer for the extra load that will produce the 11" prop ( bwt I think this is other reason wich probably will make you stick with 20% nitro ) just take your time to tuned properly ;) . And for sure I guess your Tsunami will break the 100 kph easy [8D]. David , is you mini pipe made it with mousse can ??? its looks like . Ohh yess that Mig-29 is beautiful but unfortunately is out of my reach :D |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
As far as tinting the canopy, refer to posts # 209-214 here: :D

RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Nic,
thanks for the tip on the canopy. Do you think that the tinting could be increased if left in the water longer? I would like a darkish bronze color. Something like a nice pair of high contrast sunglasses (ever seen life through Serengheti lenses? :D) I'll make sure to use lukewarm water! :) David. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hector,
thanks for the YS info. I'll use your setup as a guideline but will probably spin a bigger prop (11x7) to increase thrust and reduce speed (maybe). I'm looking for good vertical performance and constant horizontal pull. I might drop down to 11x6. So the pipes are on order (perhaps the biggest pipe and header order in a single purchase ever :D) and the YS should be here sometime next week. I don't know about the origin of the mini-pipe. I bought it off someone who didn't have the info but it's a commercial pipe not home brew. I forget who used to make these sorts of pipes. In Europe I think they are still somewhat popular. In any case, I'm curious to compare the performance of the engines on mini and full pipes. I'm working up some covering templates for the wing/stab tops but in need to get a heater for my workshop. The temps are starting to dip and the hands get a little stiff. Today, however, we were back up to a sunny ~20C T-shirt weather on November 5th! Last week we had our first frost! There's nothing quite like witnessing first hand the impact of climate change up at more Northern latitudes... 'nough on that! I should have some further updates on the Tsunami soon. I guess I need to pick up a 10 oz tank for the .46. David. |

RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Have just picked this up . How Interesting . I got the Tsunami Short Kit from Juno R/c earlier .
I fell in love with it the moment I saw the lines in the original Direct Connection ad in MAN in 1994. What caught my eye was the Red White and Blue Decal which accentuated its graceful lines . Haven't built mine yet but am really impressed with your effort and this is prmoting my urge to get back to Flying after 10 years . Derek Saha advised me of the bigger Mother Tsunami to follow but I think there was delayment in Production when his major Balsa Supplier Lone Star Balsa went up in smoke . This happened just after I ordered my kit and I had to wait while Supplier B came up with replacement Balsa Stock . Intend to nose this 40 with an OS 4O FSR ABC which should punch a hole in any skies with this light structure .Should this be too stressful ( for me and my sedate flying ) could sober it down to an Irvine 40 . One of the other problems which I think is holding up the development of the Tsunami 60 is that I believe Derek works full time in his other work , thus fitting development time in . In these Difficult times this is the best idea . Just had to e-mail you and am really looking forward to the photoshoot prior to your taking to the skies . will keep in touch . sr vernon |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Nic,
Despite Halloween, I may still have to build a flying dog. I'm sure my kids wouldn't stop laughing all day! Now, the question is, trike, tail dragger or retracts... :D Astro, I'm glad this thread has inspired you. The Tsunami is a graceful looking plane... with looks somewhere in between a more common Ultra Sport and a vintage pattern plane. I recall having the same reaction when I first saw the DC ad back in the '90's - there was just something "original looking" about the Tsunami. An affordable sleek looking aircraft. I dropped Derek a line too to inquire about the 60 sized. Ultimately, it wouldn't be too hard to digitize the plans, scale them and build a larger Tsunami - or a smaller one! I think I would make some modifications to the construction including perhaps a foam sheeted wing with retracts for the 60. As you'll read in this thread, others who have built and flown Tsunami's, consider a .40 size plant to be a touch on the low side. I am (was) considering to fly mine with a ST 40 but am also thinking of testing with a .45, probably a YS FS. I built mine per instructions and the airframe came out pretty light (I have the weights written down and will post before and after finish figures when done) but I still think the AUW will come out to about 5 lbs 4 oz or thereabouts. In any case, I hope we'll see pictures of yours when you get her built! David. |
RE: Tsunami Build Thread
Hi Astro & Daven,
I'd like to build a foam wing for the Tsunami with retracts. I was wondering if I could impose by asking for an airfoil drawing of the root and tip ribs. A bit of an afterthought on my part as I could have pulled these before completing the wing but unfortunately I didn't. I find that a simple trace of the ribs on a letter or A4 sized sheet of paper, on the diagonal, works. Graph paper is even better but not necessary. I would be most grateful. I'll extend the thread into the build of the foam wing w/ retracts for those who might be considering a pair for this beauty! If I can get those ribs, I might put a pair of mechanicals in there or maybe a pair of Rhom's. I'm just not sure were I would put the air tank although I suppose a small one could go against the turtle deck floor if it clears the tail linkages. Cheers, David. |

Alright,
so it's been almost two weeks since I posted any progress. Between being distracted by other things, working on other projects and planning future ones, I haven't gotten much done... until a couple of nights ago. Before getting to that though, some other grin conducing news: Guess what just showed at up at my door step? :D Despite being NIB, at first it was kind of frozen. A little cleaning and degreasing (inside and out) brought it right back to life! It now turns smoothly and has serious compression. It looks like it must have been sitting on someone's shelf for 10-20 years unopened. It still had threading debris in the glow plug socket! On another note, I picked up a couple of MK soft mounts for a YS 61. Interestingly, both the 45 and the 61 have the same bolt separation on the flanges. So..., with that said, I now seriously think that this puppy will be going into another beautiful aircraft which I picked up by a stroke of luck while I was actually swimming! So the Tsunami is back to being pulled by either the ST 40 or the OS 46. Actually, as finished, I can't even get the YS in the nose so I would have to do some more carving and repaint - not really in the mood! (Well, I could remove the drive washer .) But more on the Tsunami - coming soon... David. P.S. BTW, don't worry about that spinner... it's only used for fitting purposes (I wouldn't use it as I'm sure it's rather unbalanced). |

Well, I finally got some pictures taken of the trimmed out Tsunami. As you might appreciate it took some time to get the trim done given that I had to trace plans, make templates (13 to be exact) and cut covering along curved lines for every single piece [&:]! I'm not sure what I was thinking but something simpler might do me fine on the next project!
Some minor cosmetics remain to be finished as well as a few decals but those will go on once the gear is all installed. The wing is essentially finished with the exception of the aileron pushrods and some wing skids. Of course I managed to build in a somewhat convoluted path for the servo wires inside the wing so when it came time to install the servos with their 6" extensions they wouldn't pass through and the connectors would just peek out of their exits but not actually exit! [:@] So after considerable thoughtless wrestling to get the extension junction through one of the ribs, lightning struck and I pulled everything out and swapped the extensions for 12" lengths - Eureka! Of course I also managed to snap my pull threads (dental floss) in the process so I had to resort to magic with the bath tub stopper chain :D. I'm getting pretty good at it actually, this is the second wing I've had to do this with [:-]. I guess I won't be using floss again... I'm now moving on to the engine installation, throttle pushrod routing as well as the tank, plumbing and battery installation. After that, I'll be able to move back, install the radio and link up the tail feathers. I'm off to pick up a 10 oz tank tomorrow at the LHS. Hope you like the pics! David. P.S. Please disregard the hideous green floor. Someone who was color blind must have painted it previously. |
