Calypso Information...
Oh Boy, how about those Packers....? Does anyone have a Metterhauser 11" x 9" fiberglass prop from the 80's laying around? Rusty Dose Team Futaba Team YS Parts and Service |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Rusty,
hope you nailed that S60. I was curious so I poked around for Metterhauser props on the web without a single hit - most unusual. Mitterhauser on the other hand is a popular name. I suppose you wouldn't settle for a Graupner prop? I think Hanno used these at some point or other. David |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Prettner Calypso...
Thanks to all of you...the NIB S60 is mine for $107.50. A Graupner prop would be fine. The prop needs to be wide, very stiff and 11" x 9". The simplicity of the model, low over-all fuselage volume, makes the speed or more specifically its ability to accelerate quickly, (low drag) will require the prop and landing gear brakes to be fine tools for up and down lines, spin entry... The prop is in someone's shop and I want it in mine. Rusty Dose Team Futaba Team YS Parts and Service |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Rusty,
I may just be able to source you such a prop. I'll let you know. David. |

Metterhauser props on the web without a single hit Note also the weight of Prettner's Calypso - just 3.5 Kgs - the lightest model at the event and perhaps another "secret" of its success. Ray |

Good haul Rusty. If it's not too much trouble would you take some tach readings once you get it broken in? Will you break it in with the pipe or with the stock muffler?
It would be very useful to have some numbers on this engine so that it can be compared to the earlier Blue Heads and the later Square Heads. I have a nice PDP/STS Blue Head and an S.61K Square Head that I will tach with stock mufflers. Then we'll know where everything stands in relation to one another. Thanks, David |

David, not to withdraw the joy of taching your engine, just as a supplement take the attached diagram. Text says power could be 20% more or less than shown, due to frequent modifications of this type. Unfortunately, there are no S61 data in my book (though I could offer Webra Speed .61 Racing short and long stroke and Speed LS, OPS .60 Ursus, Rossi .61 FI, Hanno).
The old (typical) Graupner propellers are out of production for at least two years. I tried to get one but to no avail (means go to fleabay). I'm not sure that Hanno used a Metterhausen prop. The list Ray presented here is a bit ambiguous, the second and third line could mean the second-placed German used a Metterhausen 3-blade 10x7. In this case, Hanno used a "no-name" 11x9. If you enlarge the picture in post #19 you'll notice that the left prop blade is labelled "Prettner", whatever that means... |

Well spotted UStik. You are quite right. It was Bertram Lossen who used the 11X9 Metterhausen. So what did Hanno use. See below -

RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Amazing, thank you! So today the model could be flown true-to-original only with an electric drive (ESC with brake function). Obviously, the var-pitch prop never came into widespread use and should be hard to find now, if at all.

Some performance curves and specs for the Super Tigre S.61 (ring)
UStik - I wondered how a V/P prop could be described as an 11X9. That's my excuse anyway! Sorry for the "duff gen" ( there's an old English expression for you to research) The W/Cs were held at Pensacola when the Calypso won. Surely some of our US readers/posters were there and have some photographs or recollections of the model. Ray |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Thanks for the data UStik. What I'm primarily interested in is how the three ST's differ in power. This is problematic because of all the different versions of the Blue Head that Garofali produced. I have no idea whether the S.61 underwent changes during its production. I believe the S.61K remained the same during its lifetime. The BH that I have is one of the last versions; it has PDP porting, STS porting, a chrome sleeve and no baffle on the piston. It's probably one of the strongest BH's, too. Still, I would imagine the S.61 is stronger having Schneurle porting. But, is it stronger or weaker than the S.61K? At any rate, it looks to be a bit lighter (smaller head). I will tach my BH and S.61K with an APC 11x8 and a Top Flte Super-M 11x8. What I'd like to see is an rpm figure for the S.61.
Thanks, David |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Yes, David, I think Ray's posting gives you these figures, though without assigning propellers. The data I posted are for a BH with "Perry scavenging", what essentially means Perry Directional Porting, PDP. The textbooks show Perry porting with a baffled piston, and the engine in my book is baffled as well. (AFAIK, only Schnürle does without baffled piston.) I think the data could apply to your engine, particularly if it has a hard chrome plated steel sleeve. It should be one example of the long-standing G 60 series. The changes were made to the carburetor, the piston (cast or forged), the porting and maybe other things. That's meant to be the reason for the +/-20% differences in power. By the way, my book explicitely mentions that the G 60 was especially popular in the US.

Prettner Calypso ARC...
The Modeltech ARC has arrived. The ST S .60/.61 has arrived. Macs standard header has been ordered. The muffler that came with the S .61 FITS on my NIB ST .60 Blue Head! An almost impossible muffler to find. .60 size Supra retracts with titanium struts were in stock. Would anyone be interested in a build thread? Rusty Dose Team Futaba Team YS Parts and Service |

Absolutely!
BTW, I nabbed one of those mufflers last month at a swap meet for $5 and put it on my Blue Head, too.:D I'll have tach readings for it by the weekend. David |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Hi guy's
I just bought a second hand Calypso, it has all radio gear and the best, a piped Super Tigre 61. But it's in bad shape and I need to put some work in it to make it flyable and good looking. It has had a hard life, the balsa in the nose is soaked with fuel, and the engine needs restoring. The guy before me flew the h-ll out of it and did not even clean it after flight. I'm stripping it right now and will show pics later. This makes it easyer to forget my awful mach 1 fuse. Take care. |

I came across this RCM review.
Also, I recently picked up a Como Schneurle .61 and an ST S.75. Both are roundheads of the same series as the ST S.61. The Como is basically identical to the ST and uses the same internal parts, AFAIK. Since BPA doesn't limit to 10cc, the .75 would also be a decent choice for a plane like the Calypso. David |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
double post. Sorry.

RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Rusty,
did you find the props you were looking for? I found 11" FG Graupner props at my LHS. I'm not sure about 11x9's but there certainly are 11x11's! Let me know and I'll have a better look - you kinda have to dig a bit as it's a warehouse more than a shop. BTW, how's the build coming along? Nice article David. The good days of RCM! David. |

Calypso...information on Modeltech Calypso ARC
Props, power system photos I was in Milwaukee a few weeks ago and stopped by a hobby shop with boxes and boxes of stuff from...the beginning. I found a Graupner 11" x 8" plastic nylon prop, a variety of JZ props and a Rev Up. The wooden props will have a few standard "mods" including the angled tips and blade thinning. A warm Saturday afternoon may allow a flight with each of the props and a caller with a notebook discussing the results. A tachometer for the purist, I prefer to just "fly" them. The Buy-Bay found motor is as used by Mr. Prettner, header and pipe by Dave at Mac's. The cost of the project is reasonable considering it was "World Class" in Hanno's hands. (Note: the Goldberg Falcon 56 MkII would have been in Hanno's hands as well.) Modeltech Calypso kit $350 with shipping Super Tigre s .61 $ about $150 Mac's header and pipe about $80 Original EZ Supra .60 retracts about $70 Rusty Dose Team Futaba Team YS Parts and Service Old School State of Mind |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Nicely done Rusty.
If you are still interested in some Graupner props, there are racks/boxes full at my LHS - I just need to find the right sizes... They wouldn't have a clue where they are. :) That looks like a marine double quiet Macs pipe - true? David. |
RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
Hi,
I am looking for plans og the Calypso - I want to build one. Could some one help me with them? |

Looking at the Mac's site that's a Rossi header. You want the #2900.

RE: Prettner Calypso Plans...
I have a dead Calypso (AVIOMODELLI KIT ) I had a brain fade on landing OPPS!!
I am thinking of using my dead one a as a tremplate to draw up a plan to build a new one, it is a right off, but enough is left to copy the wing core and fuse shape, ect. I have never done this before but I am going to give it a try if any one that has a Modeltech wood one and can take some detailed photos of its construction ("close up of the formers ect ") or if anyone has a crashed modeltech that they could de-construct that would also help. Once I have a plan, construct one and it fly's ok I will post the plan for download Free, (For copywrite reasons it will have to be called something else) Any help would be great. John |
