Not so old and not really classic pattern. This is an early turnaround design for a 120 4C.
Name the plane and the designer :)

That didn't take long, just two guesses and 3 hours. Yes an Excaliber by Steve Stricker. I don't think too many of these were ever produced. I know I got this one from the original mold. If I remember correctly Colin Cambell was laying up the fiberglass. (That could be wrong though)

I called for Steve Stricker a couple of rounds at the Nats one year and he was flying this airplane. I always liked it.

I have the stab and wings. Wings are sheeted, not sure if I ever did the stabs. Started it back in 93 or so but probably left the hobby shortly after. I held onto it. Not sure if I will ever finish it or not. Naybe Electric :).

I remember seeing the wood prototypes under construction over at Sam Turner's shop. Steve had given Sam some rough sketches and Sam was engineering the actual plane. They were relatively heavy for planes at the time, but this was of little concern to Steve, apparently. I recall they had tricycle gear, with doors I think. It'd be a shame not to build it trike as the military look was intentional.
I confused this with the T2A-3 because of the similarity to the earlier T2s in the dorsal/fin area, low wing and military appearance. Really now, aren't they similar?

Yes the originals did have gear doors and they show them on the plans. Would definately look better as a trike but if I finish it, it will likely be a tail dragger.

Hey Stuart,

Nice looking fuse. Are you going to do a build thread?????:) If you don't, good luck with your build..

BTW, For the few years I've been enjoying RCU, I've learned that you will be hard pressed to post any type of classic pattern plane that someone in this forum doesn't recognize. The knowledge base here is almost scary...:D

I am not sure I am ready to restart that project. The wings were sheeted with all of the internals done back in 93 or 94. Luckily I didin't cut out the sheeting over the gear areas. Now I am flying 2M electric pattern. So if I do complete it I might make it electric which would mean a tail dragger with fixed gear. I am also not ready to get rid of it :) I've held onto it through 15 years of not flying as I always thought it was pretty unique. I don't know how many were actually produced but I do not think it was that many.

Cool. I actually built two of those back in the early 90's for other guys. I think one of them actually won the WRAMS show beauty contest. If I remember correctly, it was a bit tricky placing the wing socket and pipe tunnel in the fuse correctly.

I never flew one of them but always loved the way Steve Stricker's flew. IMHO, build it as a trike, it looks much better that way. Either way though you'll have a great model.

Steve and I have been friends since high school. I helped him build several of his TOC birds with the Glass Ultimate as the first one ending with his never seen in competion 50% Extra. I have the first and last Excalibur II's that were kitted. Greg Marsden is who did the plug and molds. I was with Steve at Greg's home in Canada when he layed up the fuse for the plane I still have. Steve talked me into having Sam Turner build mine since it was the first one for proofing out the kit instructions and that turned into a bad deal all around. I'll just say that I paid Sam very well up front for the project that was to be done in 30 days ,and he was six months late delivering after tons of excuses I got my plane back poorly built. Anyway I still have the molds and can make kits. Steve gave me the rights to it and his Glass Ulitmate we built in his townhouse when he stopped flying competition a few years ago.
