RE: Picorare Build Thread

ORIGINAL: mrshea

hey david phil here. I haven't forgot about building this i decided to go in a different direction and make a foam plug and lay up a fiberglass fuse for the pico. I figure a good time to learn and if it fails i can always go back and make the wood fuse. Starting on the plug this weekend. Will keep you updated. Phil
That's an interesting idea Phil. I have an equivalent sized model by JM Glascraft called the Fux-X (looks like a P5 or P6) made with a glass fuse and foam wing. The fuse is laid up with very thin glass and is quite light. Intended for a TD 049 back in the day. Current day plans show electric power using an inrunner.

Do you intend to actually make a mold for it or simply lay up glass on the foam plug? If the latter, I'd use think cloth to lay up the fuse - no more than 3/4 oz to start. You could finish the outer shell with a layer of 2 oz cloth to give it stiffness. Alternatively, another idea might be to section the plug once it's carved to shape and insert some lite ply formers. Then, layup the glass and then remove the foam leaving the bulkheads in place. This would allow a lighter overall layup. I'd plan on an inrunner for such a setup mounted to a 1/8" ply nose ring on the fuse - 2 or 3 screws through the front.

Sounds like a challenge, especually in that size. The wood fuse builds up pretty quickly. The tricky part is carving the fuse top symmetrically to shape, the side tucks and particularly the nose area. For the vertical, if I were to build a second wood Pico or Nano, I'd bond the vertical sides directly to the fuse sides before framing up. Getting a foam vertical symmetric and perfectly straight sounds like a challenge too.

Make sure to post your progress!

David.
