Best servos for classic planes
 

My question is servo would be best for use in classic planes. I plans to have a few classic planes I have completed or ready to build, Phoenix5, 7, 8, Curare, Calypso and one or two others. I dont want to wast money on overkill servos. I dont want to get into a discussion about what brand is best. When I flew these pattern ships in the 70's we did not have the choice of servos we have today. I just want a servo that is at least as good as those.

Some facts

I dont care about being competitive with the best performers, just flying for my own enjoyment.
I may only put two or three gallons of fuel a year through each.
I would like to use Hitec servos because I have that brand now, not that I think they are any better.
How does standard JR Hitec servos (HS 821) stack up with the 70's servos.
I have DX7 system
I will consider mid price servos if a tech reason exist for using them.
When I asked distributers this they reccomended the higest price servos. (dont make sense to me)
What are others using, such as SPA type planes

Hope this is not too many questions, I flew my P7 a few weeks ago after putting new stuff in it. (Flew great) I use Hitec HS5645MG servos and have no idea if this is over kill, ( I think is is) or not.

Well,

Those old servos put out about 32-40oz/inches torque and weighed about 1.4oz. The 821s put out about 70oz/inches, weigh about 1.6oz. and have speed and centering as good as the old coreless analog ones. Hitec makes some similar I'm sure.

Ron JR / SPEKTRUM HS 821 'servos are very good, use a6 volts Rx batteries pack with them, you 'll get 80 oz of torque and speed will increasetoo,I 've been using them for long time with no problems in CP planes with .46 to .60 glow engines.

As you mentioned it's useless to start a discussionabout wich ones are best, but for sure most pilots will agree JR servos are way ahead in tech from other brands.

Also want to mention that HS 821's are not standard, those are digital servos and much better than Futaba 3151 or Hitec digital's.

Ron, I used to use the JR 4000 and 8000 series servos "in the day" and for what you are looking at doing with your models, any of the NEW standard servos will work fine. I am in the process of putting together a modified UFO at the moment and looking at putting in JR DS8231's for the controls and mini digitals for throtal and mixture controls.

I used JR 821 (Spectrum) digitalservos in a 2M Pattern plane and flew it from Sportsman through to F3A class . . I was super impressed with them for the money. Great servo, OK power, OK speed, good centering, and good life. They are only single ball-race on the output, but they stayed reasonably tight.

I have no trouble recommending them for sport/competition flying in planes up to about 74" span and 12lbs . . BUT not this size if it's a 3D design. Need more torgue and Metal gears for that.
