Note: Shadel/Nelson YS Piston & Liner Installation..

I got a big shipment of bearings this past week so I put allot of my torn down engines back together....This was my first opportunity to install one of the Shadel/Nelson liner kits in a YS AR engine...I came across something I thought you guys would like to know...

There may be an interference between the piston and the crank towards the bottom of the stroke with the Nelson liner in the stock condition...If so you can add a chamfer or bevel as shown in the attached photos...

I've seen some variation in the pistons used in my YS 61LS & AR engines...Some pistons only have a small skirt which doesn't wrap around as much as the new Nelson piston does...Then I have other (assume newer) engines which have a skirt which wraps around just like Henry's piston and has the chamfer/bevel already in it...I elected to follow the newer engine style and add the slight bevel in mine...

Here are some photos which hopefully are clear enough to make some sense...

Thanks, Chuck. It is very clearly illustrated.

Well I was planning to have a big engine run day yesterday but it didn't happen... [:o]

I wanna try and have my ducks in a row (and buy some long johns) before I go out of town...he he

It will probably be after I get home before I have a chance to run them...Oh Well..

Hi Chuck,
WOW, I can't believe that got past Henry...[:-]
How did you 'trim' the piston? Machine it or dremel it? Nice work!!

On another note... ever have problems popping the con rod off the crank pin? I have a Hanno (with the liner out of course) that I can't seem to get the rod off the crank-pin (the other 3 I just disassembled - the popped off easily). I'm thinking the rod isn't sliding back on the piston pin; so maybe I'll try some penetrating oil. Any thoughts??
Regards,
Will

flywilly,

I had the same problem on a few used SFs/RFs I have cleaned up. The rod was indeed stuck on the wrist pin. I sprayed a couple with WD-40 and soaked the others in metanol/Heet with the piston inverted to loosen them up. Both methods worked.

Good luck.

Hiya Will...I just used a file because it's such a small amount of material you actually need to remove..I thought about a dremel which would have been quicker but I didn't want to take off "too much"..he he (I used a course file first then a fine file to finish it off)

I've had some stuck piston pins and putting them in the oven has worked for me...Penetrating oil or WD-40 would probably be a great idea too...In my case's it seemed that a build up of "gook" was normally the problem so I think the heat helps soften it enough to remove...

I have to admit that when I first ran into this "interference" I had only seen the YS pistons with the small sleeves...Then when looking at the piston hitting the crank I was thinking you would have to remove half the skirt to make it into a "small" skirt (Oh Crud!!)...Fortunately I took another engine apart to see the factory piston with the small bevel...What a relief!! (Pun intended..he he)

Henry sure makes some good stuff and I'm sure the last time he made these was a long time ago!! When I was thinking I was gonna have to grind off half the skirt I was sorta miffed at his missing on this one....But when I realized the small bevel would work..I just chuckled...Well worth the effort!! :D

Have Fun...

Chuck
