Looking for Info on kits available
 

I have a O.S. .61 RF that has been sitting around and is in good shape and in need of something to pull around the sky.

I was flying sailplanes for a number of years and just getting back into power models. I would like to know what is out
there that is time appropriate to this motor in a complete kit and not just plans or short kits. I would prefer if it is something
that is designed for an upright engine mounting with a buried pipe install.

welcome aboard.

Like Jeff mentions, the Bridi XLT and Escape are two ideal models that were designed for a RE exhaust 61 with pipe under the hood. The former is still being produced by Bluejay (link provided by Jeff) while the latter is a kit that from time to time can be obtained on auction sites. Two such Escapes recently were sold - the last for a great price of ~$100.

Other designs that would work well are the Kimbro Deception (also kitted by Bridi) and the MK Arrow. This last may also be available from someone on this forum who might have an extra one they'd be willing to part with (perhaps this is wishful thinking). MK kits are beautiful and go together like butter. Kimbro's Deception is very similar in construction to the other Bridi kits but may be a simpler build yet. Frankly, although kits do pop up from time to time, I'd recommend going with a short kit (RCFoamy here) and purchasing good quality balsa for the fuse and fin. The Deception, to my mind, might be the simplest of all to build by design - a beautiful model to boot and somwhat different in concept from the other designs of the era.

Classic Pattern Trader...

The great thing about my 100% non-commercial "Classic Pattern-Trader"...it can be delayed for the greater good of the content. I have not finished the September issue due to my very high standards and chasing a few details. It is turning into a "Fall" release.

I am trying to make this a "fun" activity for me and am not obsessing about the deadline...I do appreciate the interest which has grown to hundreds and circles the globe.

The little pilot is Chip Hyde of course with an "old school" Ugly Stick. Chip is the original "Child Prodigy". If you have never seen or heard of his very interesting trimming methods...they are awesome. My favorite is told by Dave Lockhart about Chip sorting out a quirky Prophecy-Dave tells it best.

Time frame?

Short answer- Soon.

The long answer- It is all about the "mission". The "Classic Pattern-Trader" began as an RCU thread called "Treasures sought, treasures found..." and removed by RCU due to a variety of RCU "code of ethics" violations. I disagreed, logically and socratically discussed my points and benefits to the RCU guest and member's...thread removed. Ok...the interest was and is actually pretty amazing!

The "Classic Pattern-Trader" was born to discuss the people, pilots, planes and accesories from the golden age of R/C precision aerobatics, 1968 - 1985. The idea was to take my list of stuff I wanted to buy, add "price discovery"information that I had collected and observed and share access to people who had stuff that I didn't want/need. A couple sheets of paper, collect an e-mail list and send them out blind carbon copy. Easily done.

Ok, so that seemed great for about a day and a half. Then I thought about it. The real value in any word of mouth process is that the word is actually shared with more mouths. The problem is that mouths don't want stale or out of date stuff so I decided that the (CP-T) needed to make the content more timeless and therefore more desireable to receive and therefore easier to share.

Now we are getting somewhere...I have a reason to call person XYZ and ask them questions and involve my pal PDQ or LMN to contribute something I think is interesting. Issue number one was created (some of you thought it would never get done!) and I sent them out. Crazy thing happened, you guys liked it and shared, and then they shared and then they shared so now it is actually a meaningful collection of MANY interested parties.

"Classic Alerts" was developed to share cool stuff that was available via "internet auction site" or private seller...it works. I have used it minimally...they work.

As of now, I have a very clear idea of what "I" would like to share in the (CP-T) and prefer things to be logical and in a tidy order so a step back for the greater good is the new "mission" rather than simply meet a publishing deadline. The 100% non-commercial aspects of the (CP-T) allow this flexibility. The content for better or for worse is 100% of interest to me and may NOT be of interest to you.

Current Mission:

1. An interview with a relevant "Classic Pattern" personality.

2. Information on "flying with precision" including set-up, flight trim and practice.

3. Detailed, reviews of airplanes in a logical progression with a "bench mark". The reference is the well known and accepted "Intruder" by World Models. The (CP-T) will compare all reviews vs. the "CP-T Intruder". Beyond "...the throttle was advanced slowly and a little right rudder was used to keep the model tracking straight...no trim was needed...it flew off the board..." NO WAY!!! The REAL story with detail.

4. Models to be reviewed: World Models Intruder, MK Champion, Calypso, Dirty Birdy, Blue Angel, Deception, Super LFX II, Komet, Sequel, TOC Akromaster and TOC Dalotel. Yep, these are my models that have either been flown, ready to fly waiting weather or in process to be just about RTF.

5. Promote longer term goal of creating an additional classic pattern event called "Classic TOC". Classic TOC is simply an event that models flown at the 1978 or 1980 TOC, same rules and same maneuver schedules have an event to compete. I believe this is a Pattern/IMAC cross-over event with modestly inexpensive models and complexity about the level of intermediate IMAC.

7. Price discovery information about kits, engines and accessories.

8. NO ADVERTISING. NO COST. FREE Yes, I am a fully disclosed Team Futaba/YS pilot.
