Give the gang at Airborne-Models a try they are very good at customer service
and go above and beyond to make any "damaged in shipping" issues correct.
I have had great service from them on one order in particular concerning a
damaged canopy, and took 3 tries before one arrived via the brown truck
that wasn't crushed. They generally ship their planes out via Fed Ex if memory
serves me right though. Give them a call:

I just bought this model from a private sale. I've haven't seen it yet as I sent it to a remote location for contest use, but I can't wait to see it and build...er, ah, assemble it because I saw it fly so well at a recent contest.
Good luck with yours, please post pics in a thread!

Hope I am not hi-jacking this thread. Here is some different idea's for the WM Intruder's. Stripped, monokote, joined wing's, glassed, etc. Not necessary, I did add some weight. Now OS 61 SF's. Some day I would like to add retract's to another Intruder.

That's not how R/C commerce works any longer. There are too many products available for any one hobbyshop to stock one of each. Plus, the fact that classic pattern isn't that well populated with potential customers and you are pretty much limited to ordering from a US distributor directly. Money sitting latent on a hobbyshop shelf will put the hobbyshop out of business in short order.

You do have some beautiful models, Vince.

You never did answer my question about your opinion of the gold head Rossi .61 AXE engines that you own. Please?

I guess I'll never get a better answer than that.

Anyone interested in a NIB side exhaust and a NIB rear exhaust Rossi .60 AXE? Oh, and complete with some sort of exhaust system?

RE: world models intruder

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know the difference between the older Intruder 90 vs the newer Intruder 90R offered by the World Models?

I have an unbuilt older Intruder 90 that I bought about 10 years ago. Then the World Models discontinued this version and then came out with the 90R a few years later. Both have a 63" wingspan. The older Intruder 90 was either blue or red.

I'm mainly interested if there is a difference in the construction of the newer version. Does anyone know of a pdf manual for the newer version?

Best,
Brian

Newer model, tube's running from servo board to elevator and rudder exit's, looks like 3:48 wire used here, plastic aileron servo cover's, aileron servo mount's included. I have not see the latest model, except they are claiming a larger rudder. Everything else seem's about the same, no improvement on the covering, as far as I know.

RE: world models intruder

The older version has a one piece stab where the new version has a 2 piece on a tube. The stab is a airfoil stab verses the old one was a flat stab. Covering on both is still garbage. The canopies are not the same, the older one was clear with pilot the new one is painted plastic ,no pilot.

Ed - Rossi. This R-60 was in another P-6. I pulled it, mounted to the RWB P-6. Same performance, weight difference, 9 oz.

RE: world models intruder

.....but does anyone know the difference between the older Intruder 90 vs the newer Intruder 90R offered by the World Models?

I worked directly with World Models when they reintroduced the Intruder. The reintroduction was a response from a direct request asking them to re-release it.

SPA was recommending the Intruder for its new pil;ots in order for them to have an "SPA-legal" (it's a long story how the plane got approved for SPA since it doesn't bear a close resemblance to Kirkland's original), ARF-STYLE plane to fly that could be put into the air quickly. It was also very useful for established SPA pilots who didn't enjoy building, wanted a good practice plane, or had just crashed their former contest entry. In addition to just being a quick build to fly, the Intruder proved to be highly competitive, (especially in Novice and Sportsman) as well.

What the more accomplished SPA Intruder pilots did with the original version was to lengthen the plane a bit, use an airfoil stab, redesign the canopy to stay on better, and enlarge the rudder. What World Models did when they worked with us was to take all our suggestions and incorporate them into the new design to make a more "SPA-ready" plane. You will notice a small SPA logo included with the decal sheet. That was their idea, and we were happy to oblige. The design and colors were worked out on my home computer. [8D]

They were going to reuse the red and blue coverings, but we supplied them with pictures of Kirkland's color scheme, which they "flipped" over wanting to know if they could get Kirkland's permission. I told them it would be fine.

For all the reasons give, the Intruder continues to be a very popular plane in SPA circles, and make a great pattern and sport plane. Some people have even taken Intruders and won in AMA contests. They are often given as raffle prizes at SPA contests, including the one coming up in Asheville in a little over a week.

RE: world models intruder

Interesting post kingaltair. Thanks! And, thanks everyone for your replies to the difference between the two WM Intruder releases.

As posted, my Intruder 90 has sat in the box for 10 years or so. I'm not too big on ARFs, but at the time, I knew that they were going to cease production of this model so I wanted to have one just in case....so I didn't have to kick myself later.

I've returned to pattern, mostly SPA, building kits from Bluejay kits, and currently building a Top Flite Contender. I've opened and inspected the Intruder the other day after reading several threads here, and I am very impressed with the quality of the build. This may be on my workbench by the end of the month.

Thanks again for the replies.

Best,
Brian

I recently ordered an Intruder direct from the website as an SPA contest raffle prize. I received a call later where they said they are currenyly OUT, but will be able to ship again around July 18, 2010, so I'll have them ship it to the "lucky winner".

If you are going to finish an original version Intruder, make sure you find a way to secure the canopy, and "ditch" the rudder that comes with the plane in favor of a larger one. Soem people even peel off the original covering and start over...it's still a lot faster than building.

Crank..you were a brave man with that multi-colored paint scheme. Normally multi-colored jobs, (to me) look gaudy, and the colors don't go well together, but yours is probably the most beautiful combination of colors I've ever seen. [X(]:) Very tastefully done color scheme and design IMHO. Looks like it took some work. Is it paint or "iron-on"??

Hi Duane. Thanks for the nice comment's. As you know, even though it is an ARF, there is a lot of work involved to strip, seal the wood, and re-cover. The picture you posted here, is Intruder #4 for me. MonoKote, all control surface's sealed, top and bottom, JR 3421SA servo's for elevator's in the rear, both side's. All my plane's are red-white and blue, this time, just a little different. On picture #3, the canopy is the stock Intruder canopy, glassed.
The rx battery pack, 6.0V 2250 Ni-Mih, rest's right under that canopy. Rudder, pull-pull. The MKote design, just did it as I went along. Lot of # 11 XActo's and single edge razor's. Large sheet of glass to cut on, and 48" metal flat bar.

Intruder # 3, the fuselage is totally glassed, along with the stab, and a new rudder and fin, solid balsa. The canopy was glassed in after install, and also widened a bit. All of them now using OS 61 SF's, ringed, same as engine's used in the Phoenix'. I did not know about the fuselage lengthening, may try that on a new one, along with retract's.

I did not realize you were on the design team of this bird. Thanks, great job, it got me started back into pattern flying, but I have not been too active lately.

Are you referring the vertical stab and the rudder, or just the rudder?

RE: world models intruder

Just the rudder. It needs to be at least 20-25% larger that the original. Even the revised Intruder with the larger rudder could use all the rudder you can muster so you can do Stall Turns with authority. Intruders are known for being touchy, (iffy) on the Stall Turns because of the small rudder. When I built mine, I rehinged the rudder to give it the maximum amount of throw. As it comes from the factory (IMHO), rudder throw is too stiff and limited.

Another couple things to keep in mind. I'm not an expert pilot, but I've heard from those that are that the Intruder should be blanced quite a bit behind the place marked on the plans. The best rule of thumb is that it should stay down when placed on its tail. One expert pilot has his set up in such a way that the plane "sits down" when the engine stops...the C/G is just in front of, or slightly behind the main landing gear.

A second thing is the stab should be set for 1/4 to 1/2 degree negative incidence, (front below rear of stab), if I remember correctly. It was interesting that my Intruder was the ONLY PLANE I've ever owned that took off on its first flight requiring NO clicks of correcting trim whatsoever when set up this way, (incidence-wise). My C/G was never quite that far back, but the experts say it needs to be balanced where I said to fly its best at the higher levels of competition.

RE: world models intruder

Stab incidence. Right on Duane, I just epoxy the stab with the metal tube, and a spar toward the rear, your incidence and CG note is where it get's secured. I have a good picture of something else to put up, I will get it on here later.
