Tiporare and Illusion photo thread
 

Hi guys, I'm collecting Tiporare and Illusion photos here in case any builders want to replicate the old paint schemes. I've color corrected the photos as best I could, but time has degraded many of the photos to the point where a lot of the original information is lost. The small thumbnail pics are the original degraded images, and the larger photos are the color corrected versions.

If you have any Tiporare and Illusion photos you'd like to see here, please post them. If I find any pics on the web I'll update this initial post.

If you're the photographer and would like attribution, please PM me. If you're a copyright holder and would like the image removed, just let me know.

Hi John,
She's looking good, hanging in the shop. I have been threatening to get it going but am rearranging the shop and flying mostly.
I bought some graphics for it, digital servos and other goodies so it's just a matter of doing it. Should fly this summer if all goes well. It's so nice, it's hard to resist flying it!

Thanks for posting all the great pictures.....:) They are giving me the itch to finish my Illusion.

Do any of you guys have a picture, or happen to know what the bottom of Dave Brown's Tipo and Illusion look like from the first set of pics (the ones with the white and brown tops). I think I've seen a picture of it here on RCU, but Icannot remember where.

You're welcome. It's gratifying to know you guys like the results. :) Some of them were pretty challenging to restore...you can see in the thumbnail originals that some of the older color photos were pretty badly degraded over time. These cleaned-up digital versions will never degrade.

If anyone has more pics of Tipos and/or Illusions, please mail them my way or post them here. I'll retouch them and append them to the first post up above for everyone to enjoy.

This is the only shot I have seen, this is Dave Guerin. Rusty Dose can tell you more. But this looks like what I remember seeing DB fly.

That's not quite correct to DB's scheme. Maybe I'll take some pics of his P-6 in the museum and post them. Will be a while though.

I took those photos at a hobby shop in Austin TX in about 1994. The shop is now closed but used to be owned by Rick Schaffer. Last year at a pattern contest in south TX. I showed those pictures to Chip Hyde. I had been told that they were his planes. He confirmed that they were in fact his. Thye were made for him by a man by the name of Ron Gillman (who Chip said used to work for Circus Circus). The smaller plane with the engine side mounted was a standard Tipo. The larger one was a modified Hipo Tipo. The Hipo had an inverted engine and the tuned pipe was routed thru the fuse (notice the larger belly pan on the bottom of the wing. I have sent some e-mails to friends asking if they know anything about the planes but have not heard back yet.

Ed, That makes perfect sense. Ron Gilman was a heck of a good builder. I've seen many of his pattern planes and they all looked like that. I think he was a pylon racer if I'm not mistanken.
