Hi all

I was my local model club Auction Friday as well as a Very nice Suprafly 25 with Minor Nose damage (all fixed now :D) I also bought
what I think is a CHEVRON.

It is part built and a bit messed up [:o]

I think with a bit of work it could be a nice plane once sorted.

Does any one have any info? or a know if it was published in any Magazine, if so Year Month would help.

What Has been messed Up ....Alot....The nose has been cut off, horrible holes were cut in the wings for servos [X(] the tail plane has been cut down.

With a bit of work this can be fixed. :D

From the photo from the data base it looks to be from the late 1970's or very early 1980's, the one I have has a 58 Inch wingspan I am not sure if it is a 45 or a 60 size plane, there is room for a 60 engine a rossi 45 will also fit.

There is no undercarage it may be a tail dragger or the builder was just stupid and forgot about wheels.

Thanks in Advance

Johnkpap

nice looking plane, the one being held up by the female model. the one you have will indeed need some work but doesn't look hopeless at all.

Judging by the radio, I'd say mid seventies.

You've got enough to build the plane, everything is there. BUt looking at the size of the girl and the radio, it needs a 60.

Thanks for the input

I have looked at the Index for RCM Articles on the RCM website :- No Chevron, I suspect it was published in MAN any one got a Index ?

I have a nice light weight HP 61 Silver Star which would put this thing into orbit, Puting Retracts on this one would be a pain ...I am going to just fit fixed blocks in the wing and a stearable nose wheel.
First job will be to fix the nasty holes in the wings with foam and balsa.

Thanks

Hi,

I briefly browsed all Model Airplane News from 1970 to 1980 but did not find any picture, ad or any other information on Chevron. But I think I have seen it somewhere in some ad or catalog. I will check some more later when I have time if I can find anything useful.

A little bit on the sidetrack, but herewith a little Chevron story from my side

A while ago I managed to buy a NIB Chevron, and yes it was made by MFA.

As the kit was made in the mid seventies, the only problem was the canopy as the material was hard and brittle (what do you expect after so many years)

So I contacted MFA in the UK, and although they do not make planes anymore they told me that they would try to find the original mold for the canopy (on the attic) and see if they could make me a new one.

At first I thought that this would be the end of the story, as it was a lot of work to sell a 10 Euro canopy.

But to my surprise, within one week I got a mail from MFA that they had found the mold and had already made me a new canopy!!!

Including shipment to the Netherlands the costs were around 15 euro.

One week later the mail brought me a brandnew beautiful canopy for my Chevron

Besides the fact that it is a beautiful plane, I thought it was also nice to hear that there are still companies which still know what the word service means.
MFA Thanks!

Succes with this beautiful plane!

In case there are questions concerning CG etc please let me know as I have the drawing of this plane

Regards,
Gert

Hi,

It is written Chevron 2 on your kit box - was it maybeaversion 1 and then (enhanced) version 2?

It was also a Mini-Chevron 2 with wingspan 51 inch/130 cm for 0.40/6.5 ccengine that was made by "Lanitz Modellbau" (LMB),from Germany I believe. I found today one such plane for sale at the famous auction site (but in Germany). Picture below is from that ad.

Thank You Every one !!!:D

This plane is far older than I expected, 1970 .....I was thinking 1980

Thanks Ray

The RM Test report is great !!!

Hi Gert

Thanks for Posting the photos of the complete Kit.

Gert could you post a scan of the tail part of your plan , it would be a big help as Mine is wrong and I will need to build a new one. A nice photo of the plan would be a big help too.

I will Update on my progress as I start fixing it up to Fly, I will be a bit of work but well worth it in the end

Many Thanks

Johnkpap

Hi Guys,

As Bo from Sweden already noted, the Chevron I bought is named Chevron 2
According to the building instructions it is the improved version of the original Chevron.
As far as I can see only the vertical and horizontal stabilisor have been changed (the vertical one was made bigger)
The shape of the new one is not nice to see, so I already marked the drawing to make it look better.

Johnkpap, I have no possibility to scan the complete tailplane (to big) but when you send me a pm with your adres, then I will send you a copy of the whole drawing.

Regards,
Gert

According to an MFA advertisement of the time, the wing section was also changed on the Mk2.

Just for interest, the Mk1 was released in mid 1970 & the Mk2 in early 1973.

Lanitz Modellbau made its own 60-size version of the Chevron, it was called Speedfire.
I sold this kit some years ago as it wasn´t complete (canpoy missing...), and because I got a complete Chevron 2 kit, same one as sound barriers...

So nice to see there are more fellows out there sharing the same weird taste!

RE: Cheveron

speed-panzer,

Yes, it also looks like we have the same taste in planes, as we always meet on the same thread:D

Looking at your picture from the speedfire, it suddenly brings back memories (I new I saw the same plane before but with a different name, and ofcourse it was the speedfire)

RFJ,

You are right, after reading the manual again they also talk about some changes on the wing (different profile towards the wingtip)
I really like the horizontal stabilizor on the MK1 version, so I think I will change mine back to the MK1 version.

Johnkpap, send you a pm back, keep us informed about the progress on your Chevron!

Regards,
Gert

RE: Cheveron

The original Chevron had a reputation for having a nasty tip stall, this wasn't just a low speed characteristic but could happen in high G manoeuvres. I had a Mk 1 and a quick application of full up would result in a flick roll. I believe the mods in the Mk 2 version were to cure this problem and they did seem to be much better.

Update

I have started Repairing the Wing by cutting foam blocks and gluing them in place of the badly cut servo holes.

once the glue has set I will cover the foam with balsa and sand it smooth,

Once Gerts Plan arrives in the post I will be making up a new tail and cutting off the old one as it is wrong.

Thanks for sending the Plan Gert :D

There are two crude switch holes and some othe damage to the fuse, as well as a nose to repair I will post progress photos soon

More Bargin Chevron rebuild soon

Hello John,

No problem, it was my pleasure sending you the drawing.

I look forward seeing your progress on the Chevron.

This week I will continue again with the build of my Blue-Angel/Red Devil, and I hope that by the time that is finished I can continue on the Chevron.

So I will keep a close eye on your thread, maybe I can learn something from your build!

Succes with the restoration!

Regards,
Gert

The wing repair worked :D and looks alot better :)

Next is fitting my HP 61 Silver Star to the fire wall and a Nose gear leg with stearing arm.

The Silver Star fits this plane well even the mufler is angled the same as the nose shape, once I have the engine mount & nose leg fitted I will put the nose
back with some fibre glass tape and use K&B micro baloons and epoxy to fill the gaps.

I tried out the K&B micro baloons on on some of the holes & dings in the fuse and the stuff works very well :-worth ordering some from MECOA.

HP 61 Silver Star - good choice, right era engine for that plane. Is it a flow-through muffler with open front? These were so cool.

I am missing the muffler for my HP 61.

My HP Silver Star 61 is a early one with the closed muffler.

The nice thing is you can still get parts from MECOA

http://www.mecoa.com/

They should be able to supply a muffler.

I have ordered anumber of times from them and international shipping is no problem.

Further progress.....

The plans arrived THANKS GERT !!!!:D

I have compared the wing and I have more issues to fix [&o]

The wing tip has been cut down, and a small tip made up.....I think the easy fix is to cut of the tip and construct a replacment from Balsa block.

The other issue is the Ailerons have been cut in the wrong place [&o]

The only way I can see to fix this mess is to remove them fill the space with balsa aileron stock and recut them.

Any better ideas ?......

I appreciate that this is and old thread but i thought people may want to know that a British company is working on bringing back the Chevron with a few improvemnts and calling it the Capri.
I am a big fan of the Chevron and Currently have 2 flyable Chev 2's and a mk1 with a Mk2 tailplane and a Mini Chevron in build. The kit is likely to be available in August with any luck.

baidarka 08-24-2013 03:52 PM

Hello. Does anyone know where I can come up with a Chevron kit, or at least a set of plans? I would very much like to build one. I live in Florida.
Thank you. Baidarka
