I tried to surf this site using dial up once.
That was the first, last, and only try!

I HAVE A 21.6 kbps dial up connection at this time and seems to be working O.K.

Always on dial-up here. A couple of days ago it seemed to slow down quite a bit, but today it seems normal.

That's because 99% of the modems made and sold are software based 'winmodems'. They work fine in a city with new lines, but get into a rural area, and kiss your speed goodbye. Winmodems lack the noise cancellation that hardware based modems posess.

If you have 40 or 50 bucks lying around, get yourself a US Robotics HARDWARE PCI modem from www.newegg.com. Makes all the difference in the world.

EDIT: here's a link, but they are out at the moment. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...+Robotics+2976

a lot of your problems could be caused by traffic on RCU's site. When the server gets loaded with people in the prime parts of the day everyone suffers a bog down to some extent.
thanks

Deadeye,

Does that modem you posted really make that much difference? If it does, I'll probably buy one. I have a winmodem ( I think ) in my computer at home. I lose my connection all the time (this is the main problem) and the fastest I've ever been connected at was 37K or so and I live rural. I have DSL here at the office and wish I had it at the house, but don't want to pay as much as some companies want for it.

Cable? Got one on the front of my truck.

Fiber? Is'nt that what makes you poop?

Nope, I still have my trusty 14.4 analog here in Mayberry. Have to climb the telephone pole to switch from the computer back to the phone.

I think my ISP system is the only system where mail delivered by the USPS is faster than e-mail.

A year ago I set up a computer without a hardware modem, because they didn't want to pay the extra (at that time) $50 for a hardware modem. They lived 45 miles from the nearest town. Their 56k softmodem connected at 14k, and disconnected in 30 seconds. They put up with it for a LONG time, then finally called me back out. In went the USR 2976, and they consistently get 50k as a hookup speed, and only disconnect when they WANT it to.

Corrosion in rural lines causes noise, softmodems cannot cancel it (well, actually, they pass that task to the CPU...but it doesn't do a very good job). Hardware modems filter the noise before it's data even leaves the modem.

So the answer to your question, is a hearty 'yes'.

Your problem most certainly could be your winmodem, but it also could be your isp (internet service provider), and phone line. Depending on how new of an area you live in your connection could be slowed by old, or low quality phone lines. Also your being disconnected could also be due to high traffic on your isp.
Thanks
Chris
