If you have 40 or 50 bucks lying around, get yourself a US Robotics HARDWARE PCI modem from www.newegg.com. Makes all the difference in the world.
EDIT: here's a link, but they are out at the moment. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...+Robotics+2976

a lot of your problems could be caused by traffic on RCU's site. When the server gets loaded with people in the prime parts of the day everyone suffers a bog down to some extent.

Deadeye,
Does that modem you posted really make that much difference? If it does, I'll probably buy one. I have a winmodem ( I think ) in my computer at home. I lose my connection all the time (this is the main problem) and the fastest I've ever been connected at was 37K or so and I live rural. I have DSL here at the office and wish I had it at the house, but don't want to pay as much as some companies want for it.

Fiber? Is'nt that what makes you poop?
Nope, I still have my trusty 14.4 analog here in Mayberry. Have to climb the telephone pole to switch from the computer back to the phone.
I think my ISP system is the only system where mail delivered by the USPS is faster than e-mail.

Corrosion in rural lines causes noise, softmodems cannot cancel it (well, actually, they pass that task to the CPU...but it doesn't do a very good job). Hardware modems filter the noise before it's data even leaves the modem.
So the answer to your question, is a hearty 'yes'.
