Well, I tried to post a lengthy reply, but I included a facebook link to a local club I found around here, and received an error msg that I cannot post a url until I post at least 10x, so my post was rejected and all my text lost. My bad for not using text editors to compose. I should learn by now, lol. Anyway, thanks for all the replies! I am hoping this hobby will add to my retirement plan. The balsa photos are great - bring back some warm memories. Can I assume that gas engines are dead? Or are there any purists? Seems like the messiest and worst part of the hobby. So much technology in 50 years.
Looking forward to obtaining a trainer and moving on from there. I've seen some "complete" trainer kits that include the transmitter, which seems like one would outgrow quickly. But I need to start over: # channels, etc. I have a lot of research to do.
P.S. Let me know if I'm in the wrong forum topic for these Q's. Still navigating and looking for the best spots to post. So glad for all the positive feedback so far. Y'know, some hobby forums can get snooty toward newbies. I do appreciate the warm welcome.

i purchased their aeroscout, and a dx6. at my age, i don't think i'll be getting too far along in the hobby. just happy building, flying crashing and repairing.
and even in retirement, it is difficult to find the time. sure fills in the gaps, especially in winter.

well boys, winter is upon us. 12-18" of the white stuff tonight. i have the skis mounted on the smart dart, and hope to be flying when the skies clear.
i know those south of us are already getting it. all the best, i hope there aren't too many power outages!

Harold 758, I think that a six channel transmitter would be adequate for you. I have a Spektrum DX9 but none of my existing models use more than five channels. That said I have an ARTF B17 Flying Fortress to finish off. It has flaps, a retractable undercarriage and a working bomb bay so that may well take up all of my nine channels!
The E-Flite Apprentice, is a very light, stable and slow flying aircraft but you'll need something heavier if you want to fly it in a wind. It was one of our club trainers when I lived in England. For something able to handle a good breeze I like the Seagull Boomerang because of its semi symmetrical wing section but I'm not sure it's available in the USA. There's nothing to stop you building from a kit or plan while you're re-learning how to fly on a foamy though is there?
As for "gas" engines being dead, I assume that you are referring to all internal combustion engines including glow engines which run on methanol. Most of my models use glow engines but I have three or four which are powered by electric motors. I don't mind getting my hands dirty and I like the challenge of getting the engines to run well, furthermore I admire the engineering which goes into a great i/c engine be it an old Enya two-stroke or a new Laser four-stroke.
Most of the new pilots at my club only fly electric and the oldest club member, a retired ship's engineer, only flies electric powered models but two or three novices have built models with OS glows so all is not lost! Besides, I expect that the growth of electric flight over the last two or three decades has saved quite a few flying fields, especially those close to urban areas.
Finally I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all of my fellow modellers have a safe, special, and very merry festive season. Everything may have changed, but the joy of watching our latest creation in flight by will always be with us.
