Default Asking price of seller

I'm not new to buying and selling hobby related items. Can someone explain to me why so many sellers are asking retail prices for a used merchandize?

For the same reason that everything is Old and Collectable. Some people think that for that reason they can ask a lot and for some reason, some buyers pay it. Good Luck, Dave

I was on flea bay a few days ago and there was a listing for a 1980s Magnum 15gp $125,buy now not an auction and the next listing was a auction for a Nelson 6,5 and the current bid was $124.99. The magnum is worth $15 and the Nelson is worth twice its current bid. Wasn't it P.T. Barnum who said "there is a sucker born every minute."

BTW I made sure I used punctuation because the grammar police are out; who can't help only complain.

Among the accumulated wisdom that my father passed on to me: there are three prices when something is sold; there's the price the seller would like to get, the price the buyer would like to pay, and the price they agree on.

Thanks to everyone for using good punctuation. I'm not the police, but I value living in an environment safe from text talk and run on sentences. We have to think of the children!

For the OP, an awful lot of sellers think there are scads of buyers out there with boatloads of money burning a hole in their pockets and who are so excited to buy something that they don't care what it costs. And to be fair, most of us have seen a guy like that once or twice before. The problem is that most of those guys spend their money at the hobby shop while the bargain hunters scan the classifieds. There's nothing wrong with making an offer you think is fair. When I make one that's substantially below the asking price, I buffer the implied insult with an example or two of similar items that have sold for near the price I'm offering. The seller usually isn't interested in selling his item for what it's actually worth though, so don't get your hopes up.
