Kits. . . How many is too many?
There is a thread concerning engines, how do you know when you have enough. That is a good thread because I was able to use it to show the wife why I NEEDED another engine. The problem is I need a new kit. I have 14 giant scale kits in the attic along with 12 .60/.40/.25/.19 kits but the one I want is not there!
I was going to ask how to tell when you have enough kits but the more important question is how to you tell someone else of the terrible shortage of kits in your life? So far I have been unable to sell the idea that I need another kit based the 'stock' showing on the wall of the shop (11 airframes in assorted states of repair) and the assumed surplus in the attic. I never knew she took inventory!

I KNOW there is no such thing as enough, but try to convince the others of that can be trying.
COLA? I forgot all about that! Thanks.

I don't see a good collection of future builds as a problem. Unless you wanted to build out a couple of the scale kits for me. . . . Or maybe wanted to buy them at the COLA adjusted price (VBG!).

Well I have about 40 myself and the Wife, well she just shakes her head in dismay when I bring another home. She did buy me a Skyshark Stuka for my B'Day though but I have actually used the COLA line a couple of times, really I have and it worked![X(] Get the kit now because later the price will go up so save now, uh-huh!!!

Gee's, I think I'm stocking up for my early retirement.
I have all of mine listed on a sheet of paper.
A total of 40. 1/4 of them are quarter scale and the remaining three quarters are .60, .90 & 1.20 size kits and arfs

Wow! I feel impoverished, I've only got four and the wings got laid up today on one of those! Gotta get to the shop and buy the Senior I've been thinkin' about. Have to buy an engine for that one though.

I explain that with the market swaying towards ARF's, that kits will probably be hard to come by in the future. She knows I really favor kits from the 70's and early 80's and how hard they are to find today. The "buy them while I can" theory usually works for me.

Well, I'm real low on flying model kits - maybe 10 and about half of them I have no intention of ever building and want to trade. But I have a huge walk-in closet stacked ceiling to floor with plastic model kits - about 80% of which I DO intend to build. I did the math once and figured at one a month it would take over 6 years to complete them all.
Hey... look on my site and if you have something to trade I have a few. I'm talking R/C kits, but if you're interested in plastic, that's cool too.
The Pitts kit is very nice, but it's for electric and I don't do electric. Didn't realize that when I got it. The kit itself is a beauty though. You won't find one like it made in the U.S. by the big boys. The smaller garage shops probably make kits this nice though.
Anyway... here's the link if anyone is interested. Is there a better place to post this at RCU?

I don't think there is such a thing as too many. I have 55 and doubles on some I get good deals on. If I want something and am short on modeling funds, I sell one. Works pretty good. I can always get the money back out of them and at least break even. Thats way better than I ever did in the stock market. Man, I wish I would have wasted all that money on airplanes.

Had 7. Got a CAP 232 today for my anniversary (#50!!!), and have a Lanier 1/4 scale Laser 200 hiding under the tree...... That makes about 3 or 4 years of building at my usual rate! But it is neat to own them!

I have 120 between kits, arfs, and planes. Engines to fill em all. My son has 20 more here. I just got six more plans today. I quit building kits and from plans and started building from three views.
I had to quit building large kits because they take up too much space so I'm building smaller planes now.

robb h I'm the same way. I made a new years resolution back in 1987 that I am going to finish all kits that i have started, and then build one at a time from start to finish. To this day I've done that and never broke or will break this resolutoin. It's great dicaplin and strong will.
You know, RCU's spell check is'nt working!!

Gunny,
I also think it leads to "better built" airplanes, as everything's fresh in your mind. I stretched it a little bit last year, as I had like 3 planes all built and covered, with only the radios to put in. A few months later, I was trying to remember exactly what needed to be done, and was scrambling around in nice weather trying to finish them.
I've built over 40 planes since I started 13 years ago, and I wouldn't say my building time has decreased at all. I have noticed though, that my attention to detail has increased. Once people start complimenting you on your planes, you have to make that next one all the better.

Sounds to me as if you have three choices, 1. count your blessings 2. start building furiously,
3. open your own LHS. I build and sail RC sailboats. Made the mistake of showing my wife a kit for the African Queen. She bought it and I've been trying to hide it under my airplane kits but she keeps asking when it will be finished. Wife people do check up on things behind your back.
Really no such thing as too many kits just too many ARF's. (That oughta stir up something)

Last count on kits was over 50, plus another 16 or so in various states of construction / de-construction.
Buy them while you can get them . . . way too many kits are no longer available (I have a few regrets).
