How many of you are engineers?
I've been back in this great hobby for a little over a year now and often when I talk to other pilots at the field I find out they're engineers too. So is there an un-proportional representation of engineers in this hobby? As engineers we often like tinkering with problems, experiment and build things, and those skills certainly match well with this hobby.
Just wondering....

RE: How many of you are engineers?
I credit model building for leading me into an engineering career. However I don't think there are a disproportionate number of engineers involved in R/C. In my club of 100 there may be one or two more but that's all.

My degrees are in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. I like to build, fly, instruct and play guitar. One of the non-engineers in the club likes to observe that people who play an instrument get the most out of their planes in the air. There was even a thread asking about musicians & fliers.
I think it may be more like Red indicated, those who like planes might often choose a career in something mechanical or otherwise related to RC & planes. And, those who are good with eye/hand coordination might also be drawn to things like RC planes or musical instruments.
Then again, I could be full of **.

RE: How many of you are engineers?
Funny, I took piano lessons for 9 years when I was a kid (I still play) and I found I have no problem having my left hand doing something different than my right hand which helps with flying RC.
As a kid I tinkered with all kind of models. Started with building gliders, then CL with Cox .049, then RC gliders etc. Going into engineering was a natural progression of those interests.

RE: How many of you are engineers?
I am about to start Uni in october - mechanical engineering degree.
i reckon a lto of people in this hooby are engineers or similar, like mechanics, ect. practically minded people.
People from the arts side are also in here, but prob not as many, and they probably don't get as 'involved' with there models.
Thats my opinion anyway!

I have a Mechanical Engineering degree from the U. of Cincinnati, 1953. Also have a professional engineering license in the states of Ohio and New York. I too, play the piano.
Have been in modeling since 1937, ran local hobby shop for 26 years, and a worldwide giant scale supply for 13 years. I design all my models (don't all engineers do that?). In real life I designed large two-cycle gas engines up to 10,000 HP, and gas compressors. All the gas transmission lines all over the world, that use reciprocating compressors to move the gas, use a formula that I developed for calculating the amount of gas flow thru pipelines. I am now retired for 19 years, and I get to fly 2/3 times per week. What could be better than that?

My education was in Architecture, worked as a Facilities Engineer most of my career. Running buildings, renovations, construction, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, that sort of thing.
Do estimates for a construction/renovation company now.

Was an engineer in a former life - designed large scale wind tunnel models and associated equipment -
Just had to get a job flying airpanes, so am doing that now...
Cheers!
