Default What am I gonna say to my grandchildren?

I hear stories from the "old guys" about how radios back in the day had to be built, and how "in my day you didn't have 'ARFs'...you had to build it from a box of wood..."

What are they going to have in 20-40 years that I am gonna tell my grandchildren about?

"Back in my day we had to actually FLY the plane... no auto pilot!"

Well... actually... yeah, about that autopilot part...

It's amazing how far this hobby has gone in just a few short years. When I started out, if you called a plane 3D, everyone just looked at you strange.

You will be able to tell them about the time when it was legal to fly RC airplanes.....

then too many people took advantage of it..did silly things and too many people sued too many people...

so they made it illegal.......

(i'm bitter right now, but it could happen)

You could tell them back in the day we had to actually sit in the cockpit and fly the thing now you just fly it from a military base on a $10000000000 radio.

I am sure you will have something to tell them when the day comes. It dont take long for new things to come to market just like a computer you buy a new computer and before you get it home it is outdated there is always something to talk about. I am sure you will find it.

How True.

"That's right son - Back in my day you could buy an ARF, with the engine and Computer radio installed and fully ready to fly plus a flight box with everything you need for under $800.00 - Of course, Gas was Only $2.16 a Gallon back then too"

"What did you say son?"

"Ohhhhh, Gas is something we used to burn in our cars - But now with Glow Fuel being only $35 a gallon, it's much cheaper to burn THAT in our Automobiles"

i know you guys will find this sad but i'm 15 and i've been flying for two years and already have a couple back in the day stories. Back in 2003 you actually had to put a flag up to fly now with this new spread spectrum stuff and all what flag.

Tell them to enjoy whatever phase the hobby is in at the time. I go back as far as 1934 when engines for models were the top of the game. To say that I've seen a lot of changes is putting it mildly. The things we only had dreams about are what every modeler takes for granted today. These are the good ol'days. When the modeling hobby leaps forward to what will then be the present who knows what wonders there will be. Time and tide wait for no man so we can only try to keep up.

Back in my day our planes didn't have an Auto Repair Button, we had to fix them ourselves.

I remember watching films in school about how in the year 2000 we'd have flying cars, walk on Mars and phones where you could see the person you were talking to! Still waiting on the flying cars although people don't drive any better than they did in the 60's and it turns out nobody wants you to see them sitting in their underwear while they talk on the phone with you (except maybe Zagnut that is).

These are the good old days right now that we will tell the grandkids about one day. Wish that film strip would have told me to buy a share of Microsoft! Oh and as far as I can tell, Jettstar is the only one on Mars, so far.

My best guess is that we'll be saying "back in our days, we used engines that ran on fuels, and you could only fly for about 15 minutes, and we didn't have these obsticle avoidance systems, and we had to look up at the plane from the ground and keep the plane within sight."

One correction B.B.- most say from Mars, not on Mars.

Did you know the left coast is second cousin to the red planet?

...but I digress.

We'll say "I remember when we actually built and flew the models", not watch VR of it happening while we fill the little toothless hole in our faces with "Tube O' McDonalds".

For every generation the "Good Old Days" were never that great. But its great fun when you become the past generation to fly and do some things in the "Good Old Ways".

With that thought in mind, Minn Flyer your dream field in the Fantasy Island thread is fantastic but You you left out the Ukie circles

That was harsh.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

while we fill the little toothless hole in our faces with "Tube O' McDonalds".
Here in NC there are a few people halfway there, with their toothless holes standing in line at McD's[sm=rolleyes.gif]

I think we might be saying, "back in my day there were heaps of glo planes and not to many electrics, unlike now".
