Oh, I feel for you people unfortunate enough to experiece, running into a PROP! I am into all kinds of R/C, but have yet to move into planes, but I am very happy to have read this thread and be able to hear WHAT NOT TO DO! from someone who knows..... and shows....OUCH!

Default Speaking of snowboarding

I was a semi pro snowboarder for 3 years. The hospital knows me by name. hahah I am pretty good a giving my self stiches.
Tried to kick start my motorcycle and my foot sliped of as the commpression kicked it and lodged the kickstart in my calf. Lots of "meat" left on the starter. Ouch. Gave my self a lot of stiches that day. Dan

I smell B.S.....was the kick starter lined with razor blades? Just wondering, I have been riding dirt bikes for 22 years, seen all kinds of bruises from kick starters, but never saw anyone re-en-act RAMBO because of a kick starter injury! Come on, did you see those pictures? If you want real respect on this thread, Go cut your finger off with a prop.............jus josin'

I think everyone learns this lesson eventually, hopefully some guys will learn it the less painful way by reading this thread. Be ever mindful of that spinning prop!!

I was bit on the right forearm by a YS 45 apc 10x7 at full bore. I was behind the plane, glo starter was removed, and I was adjusting the needle. the glow starter started rolling towards the front of the plane. Without thinking, I reached over the prop and down to grab it. I think the speed of the prop actually saved me a little grief, as if bounced my arm out immediately, with three neat, deep gashes across the meat. A lot of blood, very little pain. As it turns out, the only other guy at the field was a hand surgeon. He broke out some butterfly bandages, then asked me to hold his plane while he started it.

The same engine bit my brother in law a few months later, as I was running it up on the test stand. I thought I had adequately warned him, but he reached for something on the table....

Anyway, last month he returned the favor. I was helping him install a transmission/transfer case in a 3/4 ton chevy. It fell off the jack, and I caught it. 50+ stitches right across the palm, two broken metacarpels, and two severed tendons.

Pigman, you will really enjoy breaking those tendons loose of the scar tissue Physical therapy is a REAL BEEOTCH!!

Pigman:

That's not Buggerus, that's Buggeryou. Haw. You have my sympathy.

I have regrown the skin on the back of my right fore and index fingers countless times.

In the old U/C days everybody hand started, cut fingers were merely a rite of passage. And, of course, since very few people flew anything larger than a 0.35 engine, major damage from a prop was all but unheard of. Still smarted.

All electric starting now, thank goodness.

Fly with twin props,
. Twice the finger chops.

Bill.

Hey there, Gyro:

Don't be jumping on we who fly twins. Anybody can blow the bucks and buy a fancy this or that, with one engine. And almost anyone can put an ARF together. Then there are people like you, who can cobble something out of remaining parts or raid the balsa bin and make somethng that will fly. That puts you in the upper percentage of all modelers.

But the upper part of the upper percentages will scratch build their TWINS!

My first successful scratch single gave me a great sense of satisfaction, far more than I could have gotten from a kit or plan built plane, immeasurably more satisfaction than is even remotely possible from an ARF.

But when you land your first scratch twin from its maiden flight, the satisfaction (OK, smugness) cannot be measured. There is no greater satisfaction possible playing with our toy airplanes. It is something YOU dsigned, and something YOU put together, and YOU are the one who got it all to work at the same time.

I can only feel sorry for people who limit themselves to the ARF planes.

Twice as many engines, twice as many props
. Twice as many reasons for unscheduled stops.

Bill.

PS: Like your money/honey rhyme. wr.

If you built from my plans it wouldn't be scratch, would it?

A very good first twin is the "Twin-Air 45" from Northeast Aerodynamics.

www.ne-aero.com

Or check out "Twinman" and his posts for helpful info on bashing a twin.

Picture of my first is attached, I call it "Tiggerkitty." And it is a scratch.

The best kind of plane,
. Twins make you insane.

(Sorry, Twinman, stole your sig for that one.)

Default Oww!

Eeww! That looks sore and infected from the looks of the first photo I opened. Did this at work you say?

Odds are on that your a right hander, so hopefully it won't interfere with brushing your teeth, shaving and sh.......other tasks (things most of us wouldn't think about before doing such an absent minded act)

I guess something like this would really make you think twice about fooling with a 120 or bigger.....makes me shiver just thinking about it

I've hacked my hands up in my time (occupational) , but never in this hobby- I fly gliders maybe getting into electrics soon though...

Thanks for showing us what not to do. It's a valuble lesson.

Well, so much for breakfast...

Prop damage is something I've been extremely concerned about since I started this hobby. My instructor, when showing me how to start a plane by myself, reached over the prop and came in at 90 degrees at the top to remove the NI Starter. He's done this for 15 years, but I think after reading this, I'll take a different approach, like on board glow with a servo to adjust the needle valve!

Geesh.

Joe,
It was an APC prop in my case. And yes it did actually take off the end of my middle finger, about 1/2 way through the finger nail. I think it actually took several swipes, because we never found the missing piece. i imagine that if I had put my fingers in from the top, and the prop would have struck lower down on my finger, I don't think there would be any doubt that it would have taken them off.

Hey, Pigman:

You are supposed to be in bed, resting for the ordeal to come. I hope everything, including the pins, comes out all right.

You have my sympathy, and comiseration.

You buggered your fingers for us,
. We're sorry, Pigman Buggerus.

Bill.

Default Painted prop

FYI: Painting the prop tips white helps a ton! The orange and yellow weren't nearly as good as the white turned out. Paint your prop tips ~ its cheap insurance and it makes balancing easier.

Default Pins Out

Well the pins are out, but it wasn't easy. The doc grabbed the ends of the pins, but the plastic piece snapped off. She had to use pliers to pull the pins out. Let me tell you, I hope to never have to go through that again. So, I think that my throbbing fingers and I are going to lay down for a while. Therapy starts on Monday, and from what I understand, it just going to be a barrel of laughs.
