type of paint that works over nitrate dope?
There's not much other than more nitrate, or butyrate which can be put over the nitrate dope. Nitrate dope has such a shrinkage rate (and continues to shrink for years) that almost anything applied on top will crack and peel.
Lussterkote will go an and look OK for a while, but 2 years down the road it will begin cracking, and that's the best non-dope result I've ever gotten over Nitrate.

Interesting!
I've used nitrate on polyester fabrics (Coverite, Koverall, etc.) for years without a problem - Sig recommends a couple of coats on Koverall to stabilize the fabric. Further, nitrate is just about compatible with any paint.
