This is my compromise vehicle.
Can still haul a refer for the kids, wood, trash....
...and a couple of planes.
Wish I had one of the nice haulers that you guys have....

Here are some close up shots of one of the rack tubes that I built for my Explorer. Note that this works well since I have 4 coat hooks in the ceiling of my car...
The white plasitc on the hook is a silicon wrap that sticks to itself and protects the headliner. The lenght of the tube with the end cap is just snug enough to prevent it from slipping around. The T-fittings are where the cross braces go. I am still adjusting them to find the optimal spacing for the planes in my hanger... The beach towel is a drip catcher...

LOL......Hey Troy....I see you are in to the scale stuff! With the fuel bill, hope you don't have far to drive to get to the field.

Here's what the interior used to look like.
The second row of seats don't fold completely flat, so I was using them as a platform of sorts. Kind of
a pain, as it was difficult keep things from rolling/sliding around. Transporting long wings was a touchy
procedure - they were held against the inside walls by passing them through the rear seatbelt loops.
First revision:
The main framse are constructed of 3/4" PVC. Two lengths of 1/2" PVC are used to tie the two frames together.
I used screw fittings on the ends of those pieces - I can remove the entire rack in a couple of minutes by simply
unscrewing the front -> rear pieces then removing the two frames.
This was an improvement. Not quite perfect, though - I had to set the bottom-rear bar just high enough so that
my field box would slide underneath, and the top bar had to be just low enough so that I had enough room
to insert long, fat wings, but high enough so that the tails and/or main gear of my bigger planes could fit through.
Also had a problem with the bottom-rear support flexing and allowing planes to bash against the top of the fieldbox.
Mixed success here.
Current revision:
I added a 'notch' to both the front and rear bottom supports. The raised end is high enough that my fieldbox slides
underneath without planes hitting it; the low end gives me enough room to slide tall plane parts through. I lowered
the top-right side of the rack by 1/2" - this gives just enough clearance so that I can insert long, thick wings without
damage. The center leg adds some more support - no more flexing problems.
I now have enough room to safely transport two 1/4-scale power planes (or three .40-sized ones), my heli, a T-Maxx,
several sailplanes, fuel, toolboxes, radios, chargers, my mini-cooler, a Pizza (pepperoni.) and one passenger.

Man you guys get your planes into some really small vehicles!! Maybe i should try to get mine to fit in the car???
People keep looking at me funny while im driving with my TX popping out of the window and flying my plane down to the field!!! Now before anyone gives me crap about safety, I will have you know I stay over the sidewalk the whole time!!!! (And NO AEROBATICS until i get to the field)

I own a 89 Plymouth Grand Voyager. As for pictures, forget it. I'm almost ashamed to show it. 230,000 miles and showing every one of them.

Here is what normally transports me to events. The airplanes and trailer have changed, but the 6 wheels that get me there are the same. For my local club, is a 2002 Town and Country mini-van with either the airplanes stuffed in the back, or pulling the trailer. The mini-van was bought since it was the only thing other than a Suburban or Yukon XL that would fit a 40% Extra inside and still carry three passengers with comfort!

This was a photo before the dent Leave it to you Nick to point that out LOL. Still can't believe I did that, but thats what happens when you go 4 wheel driving with a Winnebago!! Some of the roads (if you want to call them that) that I've been down with the RV getting to remote flying sites were, well, shall we say challenging! I'm surprised that I haven't put it sideways in a ditch yet. To make many of the fields more accessible, I'm actually going to downsize this season to a normal width and shorter RV. The family isn't camping as much these days (no, I don't really consider it camping anymore), so I don't need as much space for these trips. Why carry all that baggage (including Ray - he knows what I mean!)
