**Frank Tiano's Monster Planes***
Hey guys, Ken and I are here in Lake Wales Florida covering Frank Tiano's new show called,"MONSTER PLANES".
This is only Friday and already there's a great turn out. This is an event for BIG airpanes (35lbs and above) and there are some real beauties here.
Well have a full write up in RCU Magazine soon but for now, here are a few pictures from the flightline.

Monster Planes is a new event that Frank Tiano has come up with, and it's a unique one indeed. First of all, this event is all about big planes Period. The minimum weight for a plane to enter into Monster Planes is 35 pounds, with no maximum. That's right, there is no upper limit for planes entered here. And let me be the first to tell you, that there are some incredible planes at this event. Mike and I had a great time today visiting with the pilots and their crew, and there was indeed some incredible flying going on. And talking with the staff here they are expecting twice as many pilots tomorrow as there were here today!!
As Mike said above, we'll be posting full coverage of this event in the RCU magazine, but here are some of the pictures that I took today.

RE: **Frank Tiano's Monster Planes***
Most of the planes so far have been in the range of 40-60 pounds. However, there are some BIG planes there as well. There are a couple planes here that are 100+ pounds!!!
This is the first year for this event, and Frank has done a great job getting the word out. But as more people hear about the event Frank is expecting more turnout with bigger planes. But even for the first year, this event has been incredible!!!!

Hey Ken
In post #6 there is a pic of an A-10 that appears to have lost it's nose wheel.[:@] In post #7 there is a pic of the remains of an A-10. Would this happen to be the same plane?

No, the two A-10s were flying together. One lost a nose wheel on takeoff. During the flight, another jet was landing and crashed into the pilot barrier causing the pilot of the OTHER A-10 to do a cartwheel. Seconds later his a-10 went straight in

Ok, here are some more pictures from today.
Some notes about the pictures.
The photographer is Jordan (JKEpps) from above. We put him to work for RCU today!!!!!
The pig Waco was piloted by Frank Noll who put on quite a show of piloting the big bird right on the deck at such slow speeds that you were sure it was going to fall out of the sky.
Even though he organized and was busy running the event, Frank Tiano took some time to put a gorgeous P-40 Warhawk (in Flying Tigers colors) in the air and helped entertain the crowd.
While this event is all about big planes none were bigger than this AT-6. In fact, it's full scale. The Monster Planes event is being held on an active airport and the and the AT-6 was here to not only take in the event, but also to take people up for rides.
As I mentioned above, Bob Levine had twin A-10's here. As the one crashed he had the other one in the air today. I must admit that this bird was really nice to see fly

Mike and I both agree that one of the best things about covering events like this is meeting fellow RCU members. In our first picture we see RCU member [link=http://jetmech05.rcuniverse.com]JetMech05[/link] and his daughter. It was great meeting him and we spend some good time talking about this great event, RCU, and many other things.
As you can see in the pictures, the crowd today was HUGE. By the size of the crowd it's hard to believe that this is the first year for an event like this. But one thing is sure, everybody in attendance really enjoyed the show. Also, you can see that the crowd wasn't limited to those with just two legs!!!
At the end of the show all of the planes were lined up on the runway so that they crowd could view them up close. One of the awards that will be given out is a "People's Choice" award. We will have the results of the event in our Magazine coverage.

RE: **Frank Tiano's Monster Planes***
I just returned from this event, and I'd venture to say that it will eventually grow into something really big. I flew my 30% scale Stinson SR-10 (shown flying in one of the above photos) on Friday, and my 40% scale J-3 Cub on Saturday. There were lots of warbirds and jets, but only a few civilian type planes like I build.
In my wildest dreams, I never thought I would ever cross paths with Minn Flyer, and RCKen, but on Friday morning - there they were. All I can say - is that the world got a little smaller that day, and to meet face to face with these two individuals that moderate these forums, is indeed a pleasure that wasn't at all expected. So I say to you two guys - I am very pleased to make your acquaintance, and I'll now try to keep my posts really clean so that you don't have to moderate them at all - making your job a lot easier. I looked for you on Saturday when I brought my big Cub to the field, but didn't see you - so I assume you only had a one-day stay.
All-in-all it was a fun two days. Sunday was a total bust. When I arrived at 9:00 am, about 75% of the planes were gone; so about 11:00 am. I packed up and left as well. My only complaint was that the meet was geared for the wealthy more so than the average Joe pilot. Everything was way overpriced. For pilots there was a $50.00 entry fee with a $30.00 dinner fee on top of that. Hamburgers were six bucks each, and if you wanted fries to go with them - another fiver. A bottle of water to wash them down was another two bucks, so a hamburger/fries/and water cost $13.00. I grew up in the great depression, and learned at an early age the value of a buck. Maybe we in America are about to re-learn that lesson once again from the looks of it.
In defense of the low turnout on Sunday, it was reported that at least four vehicles were busted into Saturday night when parked at the nearby motel, and all the R/C related stuff inside those vehicles was stolen. One complete truck was stolen and still missing when the news was reported at the field Sunday morning.
Still I felt so sorry for those spectators that paid a $10.00/person admittance fee on Sunday morning - with hardly any airplanes left on the field. I think in light of the circumstances, this was not right.

Jim,
It was our pleasure to meet you as well. We always enjoy meeting fellow RCU members. We have been here all three days as well. We spent most of saturday on the flight line taking pictures of the flying. We did go out this morning too, but we saw that the flying was closing down so we called it a short day so that Minnflyer could get on the road. I don't fly out till tomorrow so I'm here in my hotel working on the write up of our coverage.

Unfortunately there was a downside to this event. Some people had their trucks broken in to and had equipment stolen. See here for details
