Annoying people at the field.
I try to be humble when I am at the field. I am pretty lucky to have a wife that supports my hobby and allows me to have a nice hanger of planes and a trailer to store them in.
I never act like a know it all and try to help new guys that come out.
If someone needs something and I have it on hand (glue, screws, CA, glow fuel, gas, lead weights etc) I will be the first to lend a hand.
I am getting real tired of a few out there that think that they are the chosen one when it comes to knowledge, being stuck up and thinking they are better because they have a nicer plane, or just being a plain ole jackass in general. [>:] One that really gets my goose is a guy that inflates and exaggerates the price and quality of everything he owns. [:@]
Ok, now that I vented a little I'm sure ya'll know what I'm talking about.
Thanks for listening.

It doesn't matter what you're into as you're always going to run into someone like that.
Me, I usually don't say what I paid as the wife might hear it! [X(]
Feel better now that you've vented? Sometimes I have to do that also.
Mike, another Groucho line for ya, "I wouldn't want to be a member of a club that would want to have someone like me as a member" (roughly translated)..

Like life, every club has a few. I had one that wanted to stand in front of me and talk while looking me in the face when I was flying. Luckily he was 8" shorter. Another club member peed him off and he left. I need to buy that other member dinner.

RE: Annoying people at the field.
we have one in particular that is annoying.... he doesnt shut up, tries to give flying advice when he cant fly period. He owns several models and cant fly any of them....has to practically beg some one to fly them for him. I no longer fly his planes unless im in a great mood and no one else will, all because he gave me attitude for a hard landing on a deadstick that i did my best on.....ALSO he is constantly adjusting his engines on the starting stands annoying others while they fly..
The other annoying type are the kinds who fly all over the place unpredictably, know it and do not give a damn if it bothers anyone or not... when this guys up only the brave join him.... I fly that way my self too on occasion BUT when flying alone, as soon as some one takes off i get into to the proper flight pattern
LoL sorry for ranting

One guy at a field I used to go to, would always latch onto a beginner, and declare himself the worlds greatest flier/instructor. The guy wasn't a bad flier, but lesson one was "All planes crash". This would be the focus of all his dealings with newcomers. ("It's only a matter of when", "Don't get too attached to that model. It's days are numbered" etc. )
I don't try to sugar coat it, but PULEEEZE! I really wish the guy would shut up about it.

Yeah, like there's nothing better than scaring the crap out of the new guy to the point he doesn't want to fly for fear of the inevitable plane crash that is soon to follow after take off. Jeez! Like he's not already nervous enough.

As a retired professional pilot, I have seen and heard every "know it all" on the planet. (Try sharing the cockpit with a test pilot!) I usually just let it roll off, but on a couple of occasions I had to play my trump card. Try this: "You're a very experienced pilot, but have you ever walked on the moon?" Answer: "No". My response: "Then you don't impress me very much." Of coarse the damage is permanent, so choose the moment wisely. I've only had to use that twice in 40 years, but it sure did the job!

RE: Annoying people at the field.
Seems to me that clubs in general are magnets for a-holes. No matter what the purpose, boating, fishing or flying etc. Unfortunatly these id10ts do much damage to the enthusiasm of wannabee RC pilots and these attitudes often drive them away.
In my case the solution was to get together like-minded people and form a private club. It is primarily a social club and flying etc is secondary. Prospective members are recommended and only after unanimous agreement is the person accepted into the club. (Yeah, I know, we are a-holes too, but we try not to be.) IMHO open clubs are a recipe for disaster.
BTW - at the last club I belonged to, if you did not have a big warbird you did not belong. So long, suckers.

This is similar to what you describe. Enjoy.
F16 vs C-130
A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.
The jet jockey decided to show off.
The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, 'watch this!' and promptly
went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished
with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot
asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?
The C-130 pilot said, 'That was impressive, but watch this!'
The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130
pilot came back on and said: 'What did you think of that?'
Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, 'What the heck did you do?'
The C-130 pilot chuckled. 'I stood up, stretched my legs, walked
to the back, used the toliet, then got a cup of coffee and a
cinnamon roll.'

Actually, it's your field I was talking about. Guy called ''Eric the Red''.

You should be very happy that you have ''That Guy'' at your field and you know who it is, otherwise it's probably you.

It is good that you are humble and helpful... the good Book says not to argue with a fool, for a by-stander can't tell the difference (in so many words)... you're doing good, let them be the way they are.

RE: Annoying people at the field.
For some people its always about who's is bigger. We've all met people who like to boast about how much money they spent, or how they got such a good deal on something and how you'll never come close to being as good as them.
The best thing you can do is smile and be thankful you life isn't so pitiful that you must go around telling others how awesome you are. Everyone can spot the guy who is just boasting and no one respects because of it.

RE: Annoying people at the field.
At our field, we have a few like this. We call them the "poopy diapers club." These guys always have an opinion, nothing is ever good enough, the wrong decisions are always being made, nobody's a good flyer and nothing is as good as it use to be. Ironically, the only thing they fly is a lawn chair!
