What is the range of speed for Prop planes
Hello everyone:
I was just wondering how fast can prop planes go and what type was it? |
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
The fastest propeller driven aircraft is a TU 144 @ 545 mph

Fast Prop Planes
For RC, the average speed of quarter 40 racing plane is about 175-190 mph. Some of the FAI Racing planes that are used on an International basis are around the 200 mph range.
There are also non-racing type planes like the Diamond Dust and Whiplash that fall in the 120-200 mph range depending on the engine used. Not thats its never been done, but there are few prop RC planes that have seen 200+ mph. Its very difficult to get a plane up to those speeds, let alone be able to fly it. |
WOW!!!
A prop plane that flys 200MPH...that totally amazing. That's faster then some Turbine planes. What do those planes look like I have never seen that type of plane

fwiw ... how about >200mph, no prop, no turbine - no motor/engine :)

Ive seen a world class pylon plane that does around 220mph. And it looks very easy to fly. But is dang fast!

Well noted Pete,
The weather that I'm going to have I could probably do that speed: http://www.weather.com/weather/local...ocalUndeclared What kind of engine goes into one of those pylon racers? |
Fast planes
If you look at my Avatar, thats one of my Quarter 40 planes. It uses a Nelson .40 engine turning a prop at about 23,000 rpms generating close to 3 hp.
The picture John posted is a FAI plane, that runs on NO nitro. These planes also run on .40 sized engines, however they also use full length tuned pipes, and pretty much anything goes. FAI is popular internationally, but there are virtual NO FAI races in the states other than the qualifiers for Team USA, and traveling to to the World Championships. |

The plane in my pic turns around 34,000 rpm, I must get video next time I see it fly, its simply amazing!!

Turbines are awesome, I saw your movie.
I know you have to be experienced to fly these planes but if you ever crash a turbine wouldn't it explode like a real airplane? I have seen a couple of prop planes disenergrate but never explode. They are real dangerous.....I LIKE IT :D |
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
Props will start on fire too, not all turbines burn on crashes either.

Okay, that makes sense I got that tip when the discussion of Turbines came up but I should've realized it was false because all of the people in the discussion were "Prop lovers"
John: How did you get started in jets and what kind of planes did you fly that lead up to Turbines? |
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
Well, I had a ducted fan Byron Bullet with a OS77, not enough power so put a new OS91 in it. That was better, even flew it off Grass fields, Its for sale BTW.
Then got my Turbine waiver off a DC F20 with retracts and a YS.45 Bought a Topgun Topcat and a Jetcat P80, flew that for a while before a little accident, got to fix it up again, would sell it also, now finishing a BVM F86 sabre. If you look in my gallery you will see some of them. And on my websites |
200+mph super corsair?
Anyone heard of a giant Super Corsair that was flying well over 200mph? I remember hearing something about the wings delaminating in a race, leading to its demise.
|
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
That Super Sukhoi is amazing but quite honestly I'm no where near ready to fly a plane like that.
Was obtaining the Turbine waiver difficult to obtain? also can you fly a turbine plane without it for practice until you get one? |

Also I LOVE the Corsairs I can't wait to get better at flying so I can get one....If you find out about the 200+ MPH one let me know.

Check your PM's
Thanks on the Sukhoi vid, Its alot of fun and the plane is a blast! |
250 Plus
:D Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the JR team had a Glasair with a DA 200 on alcohol, that clocked in on radar at 267 MPH, at Joe Nall................!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was the loudest damn RC plane I have ever heard, and I really have a hard time believing the pilot had total control of it, but he did. It is just something that you HAD to see, and the pilot is to be commended. Talking about low rates, I doubt the ailerons moved more than an 1/8 of an inch at speed, if that. |

Here is a vid of a buddies jet doing 219, easy to follow and fly, there is a few passes on it.
Jet@219 On a giant bird like that going that speed should not be a problem. Id love to have it!! |
My favorite jet

Although I am a newbie I still can drool of course. That Super Bandit is my favorite Jet, I would expect to pay about 7,000 or 8,000 USD for one of those. That Jet is awesome, I would get a different color though something like this.

If you look at the movie I posted right above your, you will see a superbandit. And its closer to $10,000 into it. IMO, Id rather have something scale for that amount.... :stupid:

What is the range of speed for Prop planes
A guy who lives near me has a pilon racer that does over 200mph.
It was in the local paper. I think the article was about him being junior champion or something. |
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
Nobody has yet mentioned the other end of the speed range.
It's one that must be avoided achieving accidentally, especially when the plane is pointing straight downwards .. 0 mph -David C. |
What is the range of speed for Prop planes
And even then you are not going 0 MPH!!! not until you hit the ground of course!!!!
