Kavan Jet Ranger 1974
Way over my head!:) Webra Speed 61, Kraft radio(non computer) no gyro  Took about 6 months to build. After about another month, I got it to hover. After hovering several times over a few weeks, I proclaimed myself a "Heli Pilot"! First Flight: From hover, decided to take her for a spin around the field. I gave slight forward cyclic, and goosed the power. To witness this scale model tilting forward and flying off was a grand and glorious sight to behold! Not to far down field, it was time to turn and bring her around. As a right turn was initiated, the tail sunk a bit low & right. Rudder Stick to the Left was the ensuing input to bring the tail around...BUT...you know what that input did! So...it was her first and last flight! No process truer that I have since allowed to become habit ...Fly off the nose! |

When gyros came out did people poo-poo them like they do with the systems like Helicommand today?
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Yea, there was actually a movement to ban them at the Nats.
If you ever want to do some interesting reading, go to the AMA digital archives (assuming you're a member) and peruse the old Heli column by Walt Schoonard (founder of Miniature Aircraft) |

ORIGINAL: FenderBean Kyosho Concept 30 DX that I upgraded to a SE. May what crap those things were compared to todays helicopters LOL They were cool as H!@# back then though! Not that I would have bought either because as an airplane guy I had a natural hate for choppers, what with their constant hovering over the runway. LOL |

RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
First was Dubro Whirly Bird, second was the Dubro Hughes 300.
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
GMP Cricket here too in the 1982-86 timeframe, followed by a LMH 110+ in 1996-98.
Did any of you guys with the Dubro Whirly Bird actually get them to fly? |
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Mine flew quite well, but I had to make several modifications mainly using tighter springs on the control arms. It crashed when the solder joint on the throttle spring failed pushing the throttle to idle when it was about 40 feet high.

ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey ORIGINAL: kenh3497 ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey American R/C Helicopters Revolution 40 I think I had the Super Mantis by this company???? The Mantis was fixed pitch, the Super Mantis was collective pitch if I remember right. Yup. all the mixing was done on the heli with adjustable arms. Pitch to tailtotor and throttle to pitch had long arms with multiple holes so you could make the apropriate adjustments. I remember fixing/adjusting/maintaining for three or four days and flying for five minutes. then starting the whole process over again. It you looked at it crosseyed or picked it up wrong, you needed to go over your setup again. |
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Speaking of Crickets, did anyone actually get theirs to fly? In my case the first try I did get some 1-3 second hover hops, then rolled over and broke blades. I got 4 or 5 "flight" sessions like that. Got tired of just patching. One or two guys in OKC could hover them but I never saw one in FF.
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Yep, I flew my Cricket in forward flight. No gyro or computer radio of course. I remember as a kid, one early morning in around 1982 or 83, John Gorham came up to me at the Sepulveda Basin and said 'wow, I havent seen too many people actually fly a Cricket like that'. He then went over to his camper and pulled out all kinds of GMP goodies to send home with me. He was so nice and it felt good to get a complement from someone like that....
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Thanks!
Is there a site explaining what happened to GMP? They were really rolling along and then.... |
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Hirohito Shuttle ZX, back in 1991. Followed by a Concept .30 SX a few years later.
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Kyosho Concept 30 DX upgraded to the SX. Still have it, another DX and the Hughes 300 body for them. Still fly great, but not often.
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Started with a Hirobo Scuttle ZX, resurrected from a crashed heap-o-parts... got it for $50.00.
Moved on to a Concept 30 DX, then a Concept 60 SR. I really loved that Concept 60 with a Futaba 9ZHP. Sold everything eventually, now am just a low-stress airplane dude. [&:] |
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
Lite Machine...
|
RE: Do you still remember your first rc helicopter?which brand?
