Boston Blizzard Fly-In, only two pilots showed up and flew (video)
We hosted the first ever Boston Blizzard Fly-In on Sunday during blizzard Neptune. Only two (crazy) pilots showed up to fly despite the horrible conditions. 25-30mph winds with gusts to 55mh, -20F wind chill factor, blowing snow with drifts 6' high, un-plowed field and runway. But we manged to get to the field, fly, and with no casualties to planes or frostbite to critical digits. Best fun we had in a long time. Looking at winter completely differently these days :)

 Hi Stephen ,
:D That was great !!! Some years back I went through the winter fitting those little DuBro skis to some of my smaller planes , but I've never flown in such wind before . Kudos for actually being able to fly in that kind of environment . I think 20 or so is the greatest wind Ive flown in , 50 + is simply amazing ! |
You guys are diehard! Looks like fun

Being a helicopter, the wind doesn't effect it as much. Being a large helicopter, helps even more. I'm not sure I would have flow a plane in that wind, unless it was one that I wouldn't be devastated over its loss. But yes, we really had a ball. One of those days that just stick in your memory banks for a very long time :)

That's hardcore. But ya gotta start somewhere.
Our club's frozen finger event actually has the most pilot turnout of any event, generally 50-60. it helps that it's free and we do food too. Some years it's nice, other years brutally cold with snow etc. All types of planes make it out to fly. For those of us with electrics, the battery prep is key to having good flights. Some of the EDF's really struggled. Good luck on future events, at least attendance can really only go up...right? |

I'm hoping for another blizzard this year (at least as long as no one gets hurt because of it)! I'll bring more charged batteries this time! |
