This was my first run of an ASP 91 4stroke. I did the #1 law. Don't put your hand over the Prop while engine's running!!!!

I've had a few nicks and close ones in the 60 years I've been off and on flying. I did this about 9 days ago. It broke the prop at the hub. I have somewhere between 25-30 stitches. The Doc. had to cut some skin away due to damage. It hit the tendons and luckily didn't go through. from the thumb back about and inch it started out in the Bone, The knuckle wanted some action and pulled the Prop into it. it took most of the skin away there and shaving some bone with it. The top of my knuckle was cut in half. The are that's black contains most of the stitches they are laid one on top of the others.Then it took a trip around to the other side only requiring a couple more stitches.

You have all my prayers for quick healing with no lasting effects . Not a one of us is immune to propbite , and your example is a scary one indeed ....

Ow! Sorry for your accident. Fortunately it wasn't worse. I've never received more than a nick myself. Knock on wood! But I have seen worse. And it always involves a momentary lapse in judgement.

The good news is, I'll bet you never do that again! :)

And paint the tips of that prop white or yellow.

I bet that hurt. The worse I've had is backfires slicing my fingers. I started wearing leather gloves when starting engines.

a good case for having a starter !......
I never had one when I was younger, but as soon as I started back into this hobby after being away from it for 40 some years, I got a starter right away. ..........I know it can still happen, but at least the starter takes a large portion of the possibility away.
I do feel somewhat fortunate in that I am trained to keep real close eye on what i'm doing around that prop. I spent a life time around wood working machinery and have trained myself to be slow. careful and deliberate about where my hands are all the time. wood working tools, just like a prop,.... will bite you every chance they get !.

This engine was running 10,000 RPM. I started it with a starter.
This was done while I was going over the prop to adjust carb. and set RPM. I'm building a starting testing stand as I type.

Yes it did. And to boot I live 100 miles from the closest VA hospital which is in Reno. Lucky enough to had a great team of Doctors and Nurses working on me.. I have two different sizes of Prop Sticks. I almost always use the starter but keep the sticks just in case I need one.

I prefer White. lol

OH,....then OUCH !. it's good that you use a starter. I know the temptation to move quickly around a stumbling engine to get it running right. that's where that "training" comes in handy. I still have to deliberately and consciously hold myself back from hurrying,.....I think the hurried urge is just human nature,....and "automatic response" . I've learned to take a "you're not going to get me you SOB", attitude about things like this from getting bit by a table saw many years ago (luckily same as you.,...just a bad cut and some stitches) and working around woodworking machinery all my life. lot's of fast spinning, extremely sharp stuff all the time !.
hope the healing goes well,.... at least no permanent damage like one might get from a saw !. you'll have a different attitude about being close to that spinning prop for now on,... i'll bet !.

I did something like this....in front of my cousin, a doctor. I had an airboat and was running it out of his fishing boat when I accidentally stuck my fingers into the prop with the motor running at half throttle. My first mistake was not removing the detent in the throttle, the radio was a two channel surface radio much like any airplane radio and the throttle was set up as forward and reverse instead I should have reworked the throttle for forward only.
Anyway, the resulting disaster looked like something out of Texas Chainsaw Slaying, with blood from gunwale to gunwale, all over my shoes and pant sand the airboat. well, it looked worse than what it was. The cuts were to the top of my fingers and the end of my thumb so no danger of tendons being damaged but I needed 12 stitches.
All this in front of my doctor cousin.
Talk about feeling embarrassed and stupid.

I like the idea of the plane being up off the ground on a starting stand, at a comfortable height. I think that takes a lot of the rushed feeling away from getting the engine running right during a start.

It amazes me how dumb and careless some people are.
