Best Club Newsletter
 

While RCU was down for a short period Sunday I still needed my daily dose of R/C so I started to cruse through different club web pages. When checking out an unfamiliar club one thing I always find interesting is the newsletter. While some newsletters are just mere letters of information some are very professional looking publications.

What is the best newsletter you’ve seen? Please post a link.



To start this off:

The best looking one I’ve seen is hands down the SCCMAS Servo Chatter. The cover looks like a full-blown R/C periodical.

For content I will have to go with the Flying Penguin. Although I don’t think this newsletter is the “official” publication of any club the entire site is entertaining.

As the editor of Servo Chatter... I'd like to say thanks! I've been a part of it since 1996, and it's always interesting to come up with new stuff for it.

I too am one of those ink stained wretches who does our club newsletter. With a couple of short time outs this has beeen going on for 11 years. There are few things more disturbing to your newsletter writer than that blank white screen. Notice I said writer not editor. An editor edits items that are submitted for publication. That is seldom the case. Creativity, a half way decent command of the English language and the willingness to accept a task that is almost universally shunned by the general membership are the basic requirements for creating, printing and distributing something that will occasionally end up in the bottom of a bird cage. A boo-boo is writing sentances that are too long (as above). To compound my problem I have just had Windows XP and Works with Word become part of my computer world. These things are supposed to make life easier, and perhaps someday they will, but for me this is just another problem. The occasional compliment for your efforts is like a gold nugget. Dificult to find but for that reason all the more valuable.

I too am now responsible for at least writing an article for our newsletter. I need to write something only every other month, but when that blank page is staring you in the face, it's a pain. We try to keep it simple and topical so I tend to stay with recent happenings around the club. My latest is on the maiden flight of a turbine jet in Muskogee. Feel free to read.

I write our club newsletter too, guess that’s why I like to look at other newsletter to get ideas to improve the design and over all look.

Having material to write about is never a problem we only publish the newsletter quarterly so subject matter piles up.

Chris, what program do you use to publish your newsletter? I like the shadow lines you’ve incorporated into the design.

I use Adobe InDesign. I just recently upgraded to the whole creative suite version (CS). There are way more capabilities than I can ever use it for, very sweet program.
