7/5/02 Got my first flight jitter's over with today. Many thx to Dave, Greg, my instructor's & Clay for being so cool. This has been a long time coming, 3 years.Cub checked out, radio gear checked out. Oh crapp!! That leaves me, I'm not sure I checked out OK but Dave was willing to take a chance on me anyhoo. He flew the maiden, the OS 40 4st. purred like a kitten, no ail. or rudder trim needed, only down ele. That was corrected on the bench between flights. I built it and it had no bad habit's was almost enough for me. After a refuel and minor adjustment's Dave ask's, you ready to go, yeap!! I say. Up to the runway i go, with the help of my wife, & a couple of the old timer's (club regulars) Small rise from the pit's to the runway.Cub went airborne in a short roll-out (pretty strong headwind) At altitude it was mine, now guy's , it's been 22 years since I've flown rc. What a thrill, got to fly several circuits, but was too windy for an approach try by me.Next time tho. look out.In case you think for a 48 year old man I'm over reacting. Keep this in mind. Remember all the help I said was given me to get to the runway. I'm a quad. of 3 1/2 years now and never thought I'd ever get a chance to leave my bed , let alone fly rc. RC'ers, Hummm, great bunch of guy's in my book. Until next time , thx Dave and the Clark co. rc'ers

The Dave and Greg that Buz mentions would be my son and I. I would first state that the Great Planes Cub is a dream to fly. It has no funnies about it and with the 40 4 stroker it just cruises along. As Buz stated, it needed a shade of elevator trim and it was good to go. Slow flight is great and the controls remain constant through out the full range of speed. I would highly recommend this plane to any new comer to the sport.

Now having said that, I will state the real reason that I am responding to this post. I have been in RC for 30 + years and I have been an instructor for at least half that time. I have taught my son how to fly and at the age of 10 and 1/2 he has been soloed for over a year now. I thought that watching my son solo was the best thing I could have ever seen in RC, however I was wrong. After landing the Cub with Buz on the buddy box, I turned and looked at Buz and he was literally glowing having just accomplished what he had done. I have not known Buz but for a few months, however he showed all of us today at the field that anything can be accomplished if you put your mind to it and damn the obstacle's. Buz, I tip my hat to you, and look forward to teaching you to fly again, but above all that, I am proud to be your friend. You are indeed an inspiration to us all. Dave and Greg.

This seems to have brought out the best in everyone involved. That's the way this hobby should be all the time. Way to go!

What an incredible story!

Buz, not only are you to be commended for your determination to get back in the air, but you are an excellent story teller/writer. The way you described this was really terrific.

Welcome back to the hobby, you've really inspired me!

Dave and Greg, most all of us have fond memories of the instructors that taught us to fly, I certainly do. The time and effort that instructors spend helping beginners develop skills needed to enjoy this great hobby is a truly special gift. If it weren't for this generosity most of us would still be longing instead of flying. It's dedication like your's that makes this such a wonderful hobby.

Thanks,
Keith

Your reply's have meant Alot to me and I really appreciate it, They have encouraged me and I'm sure thats the reason I felt so much more confident on our second trip to the field.Minnflyer, great post, I've saved it to a photo file, That makes up for the iced tea choke spray on the keyboard thing.(i read a post of his whilst drinking tea and started laughing) I took over the control's after take-off and flew several circuit's, It made my day to hear Dave yell to my wife Kim(the real hero )HEY!! NO FAIR!! BUZZ ISN'T LETTING ME FLY, KIM YELL's BACK TO ME , BUZZ!! NOW YOU QUITE HOGGING TO PLANE AND SHARE. HEHEHEHE  Dave had me start flying approaches and after 3 or 4 good looking one's I could'nt resist and brought her in , SUCCESSFUL I MIGHT ADD, Any you guy's remember your first good looking approach and landing?Someone said it best, but I also did the Tom Hanks CASTAWAY , YES I HAVE MADE FIRE Speech.Until next up-date (hope I'm no boring you guy's)Thx again Buz^ P.S. Is it common for the instructor to reach into hie pocket and give you a treat each time you make a successful miniver??Hummmm, oh well, Dave is the best, and i can prove it
