Great Planes GEE BEE ARF with SUPER TIGRE 2300 INFO
 

Hey folks,, I am getting the urge to purchase the Great Planes GEEBEE and I have a spare 2300 Super Tigre around, I believe the Tigre 2300 is llike a 1.40 2stroker(equivalent),,, I have a bunch of questions but to save time just give me some info on the plane itself and how you guys think this motor combo will work I think the 2300 will swing like a 18X6 prop,, and what kind of servos will the GEEBEE take standard, or some Hi torques, or what will work thanks in advance,,,

I think they look cool. But just think, all the originals crashed and burned and killed 7 pilots. Would probably make a good static display. No I don't own one.

I am not worried about my flying,, it will be a challenge but nothing I am afraid of, I was just wondering about the quality and power/weight ratio of it,,

Got the GP Gee Bee powered by the G2300 finished. The plane weighs 12.3 pounds without decals. I flew a Haffke model Z, which weighed 12.75 pounds, and it was fast and not terribly hard to land for a Gee Bee.

The R2 is actually a nice flying plane, I haven't flown the GP version but have flown a slightly smaller R2 with a .60 engine. The only real problems they have are trying not to nose-over on grass runways.

Hello, do you still have your geeb? i had one with the same set up and was thinking of doing it
again! i slowed her and tip stalled it

The plane actually flies nice, just don't fly it without cowl. Has the cross section of a bleach bottle!

The Great Planes GeeBee R-2 actually flies very well. I have an OS 1.20 4C on mine. It is more than enough power and the plane is a lot faster than you would think a watermellon of a plane could fly! It does require coordinated rudder input with ailerons in turns else the tail will visibly slip during the turns. Takeoff rolls are straight with little rudder correction required and are short.

I encountered two problems flying the GeeBee.

(1.) APPROACHES: I found the darn thing didn't want to slow down even after was pulled back to idle. Our field is small and surrounded be trees. It was not possible to pull power and lower the nose to "dive" into the field. It would maintain speed or even pick up speed and float forever. Landing this plane at something other than a full stall landing will result in roll-over.

(2.) LANDINGS: OK..here's the rub...It isn't that hard to land, but it does not like grass. Driving the plane onto the runway won't work at all. You must slow it down and do good, smooth landings to keep it from tipping over, which ends up damaging the cowl or the cowl mounts and wheelpants. They aren't very strong in the first place. The first time I flew it, the grass grabbed the wheels and locked them against the back of the wheelpants, effectively applying full brakes, causing it to nose over. The gear wires are very flexible. I ended up using a cut-off wheel in my dremel tool to elongate the holes behind the wheels, so the gear could flex and not lock up in the pants. I should have bought the oleo struts from Robart. I'm sure that would have helped.

This plane looks super cool in the air and is fairly aerobatic. It just has to be managed a little different than other planes. Oh, one last thing....GET THE BALANCE RIGHT!..or else!
