I have not purchased a magazine in about 3 years. Other than AMA mag, I don't read any.
But I don't have much interest in ARFs, or electrics, so the mags do not offer a lot to me. If a mag along the format of the old "Scale R/C Modeler" were out there, maybe then I would look. |

Apples and oranges.

Any magazine(Car&Driver is my favorite) only last about a week. Then you are waiting for the next issue. RCU has new content daily. That being said I agree with the apples vs. oranges also.

RE: Do you enjoy RCU more than the various model magazines?
Comparing is, as stated earlier, not equal. The best thing of a forum is that additional questions and/or comments can be rapidly exchanged. Also, it is a lot easier to search for information online than through the magazines. If you hang around long enough and regularly read new posts then you eventually get to know the personalities and interests of the posters. The great thing is that we all share a common interest, but our life viewpoints are often totally different. As long as we remember that our love/passion of the hobby/sport/obsession is the common thread then we can coexist peacefully. The forum is very personal, the magazines are not. Hey, you lurkers out there, share!

RE: Do you enjoy RCU more than the various model magazines?
I agree apples and oranges. Kinda like asking if you beat your wife! You can't give a correct answer.
With a magazine the assumption is the writers are experts in their field. Online that assumption can lead to grief as anyone can pose as an expert sometimes giving advice that while well intentioned is dead wrong. Usually if you go with majority opinion you are pretty safe. Although I've seen a feeding frenzy where everybody gets a mob mentality. Witness ARF vs KITS, Synthetic vs Castor oil and my all time favorite engine size. If you go by the majority of stated opinions - for a model that is rated for a .61 2 stoke someone will recommend using a Saito 180 because its not that much heavier. :) :) Okay I've had my fun, John |
RE: Do you enjoy RCU more than the various model magazines?
Way to much advertising in mags
|
RE: Do you enjoy RCU more than the various model magazines?
Ditto, fruit vs. fruit.
Mags had their place, but their honesty has slipped for the mightly advertising buck. Not to mention my interest [building] seems to be a dying part of the hobby. RCU is a community and a discussion group. Honestly [mostly] prevails. |
RE: Do you enjoy RCU more than the various model magazines?
I frankly prefer the information available in the magazines, as well as the easily accessable pictures in the magazines. RCU and other sites are great for discussion, and being able to "Talk" to people in other parts of the world, but I spend a lot more time on the computer accessing websites compared to reading a magazine. I also reduce the time to research an article in a magazine through the practice of making copies of articles I am interested in and sorting them into a number of organized files. RCU (and other sites) is a nice discussion source after dark and when I can't get to the field because of weather, but I find that I spend a huge amount of time typing on my keyboard that I could profitably spend maintaining or building.

RCU! Too hard to run the "Search Function" on the magazines. :D
