Visiting Ireland-What to See?
 

Evening All,

I plan on spending 2 weeks with my wife and brats in Ireland in the fall this year... any thoughts on what I MUST see/CAN'T miss?

We do of course have a few things on the itinerary already, but I'm looking for some input from local sources....

Hmm... that makes sense... we'll be in the republic, not Northern Ireland. We plan on a week near Dublin and a week near Shannon, but we'll have a car and the country is small enough that most places will be within driving distance.

I've already found the website for the Irish MAAC/AMA equivalent and have been checking out the local clubs' websites...

LOL...Pubs...OK... but golf is, for me at least, an exercise in frustration! :D

Spend some time in the south west part of the country. Explore the coastline. Stay off the main highways and use the country lanes. You will see spectacular scenery.

Be Warned, Ireland has one of Europes fastest growing economies. It is very expensive. A family of four touring, accomodations, meals, car rental and gas allow $400.00/day min.

We've been to Scotland, England, Florida (3 times ) and France doing similar vacations... we do the "self-catering" thing.

We rent an apartment or house/cottage for a week or two. It works out much cheaper than hotels, meals are cheaper because we prepare our own breakfasts and dinners... for lunches we either do "pub style" or grab a sandwich from a deli. Yes, it's more expensive than here in North America, but doing our own meals and renting a cottage out in the country side works out cheaper than staying in a hotel.

Also, being out in the country lets you learn a bit more about the local areas and people. We spent 2 weeks in France a couple of years ago and I got to meet a group of french RC flyers one afternoon, one of whom I still exchange emails with.

With young kids (10-12yo) it's a good way for them (and us) to learn a bit more about the local culture. Just shopping for groceries becomes an adventure....

The only way to do it if you truly want to "See" a country. That is pretty much what my Wife and I do.

Ok I,m not sure what you like or disslike but what I have been told is that you could go to Innifree (that is where one of John Waynes movies was filmed.) And you can go to Ring of Kerry (where a lot of lakes are) That is all I have for now. Tha wife has cussins over there. ;)
