RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
Nice Batman! I wish I had a picture of my last one, It was kind of covered like Eddie Van Halen's older guitar with all of the different size stripes going every which way, and it looked pretty cool, had a fluorescent lime-green color as the base. The bat wings really show up good on that one, makes the up/down identification easy too!
Nice! Dave |

Dearly beloved..........
Does anyone know if Lazer-works is still selling the short kit now that the ARF pooped out? |
its on their site:
Flying Machine $67.00 By: Don Muddiman Wingspan: 44 in. .32/.53 2 Stroke 4 ch radio Plans available from Don Muddiman at: http://www.eagle-i.us/fm/ order page: http://lazer-works.com/order.html Bill S. |
Thanks Bill, guess I should have checked first. Its good to know that at least you can still get the short kit, I know it contains almost all of the wood you need, other than wing sheeting I think.

New flying machine built from the Laser Works short kit and Don's plans. Sport'in a OS 50 SXH Hyper heli engine and Macs pipe. |
Beautiful job Dave!
|
Very nice Dave1152!
|
That is soooo sweet Dave!!! How's she run with the mac's pipe? If you don't already have it, check out the high volume mac's pipe made just for the 50-55AX type engines! It makes a huge difference, huge. This plane deserves some carbon gear from Graph Tech.....

Thanks guys for the kind remarks.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1981469 I forgot to show the bottom. I found an article online about color theory for models recommending light on top dark on bottom with the top contrasting pattern making an arrow shape pointing the flight direction at a distance when the colors fade to gray. Red on the leading edge of the wing with the white band behind is suppose to make the edge visible and show the latitude of the plane as it descends. I have several gray planes that are a bugger to see, so I wanted this hot rod to be visible. I do have the newer mac pipe as Ernie suggests, but this plane has not been run yet, it is still cold here in the north. Dave

It's amazing how many Dave's there are in this thread with Flying Machines.

Put the Flying Machine up yesterday, what a blast, fast and maneuverable, goes straight up and lands like a dream. The OS Heli engine runs smooth and starts easy, sounds good on the pipe, but likes the fuel, about 7 min flight time to empty. A little wind yesterday, but did not effect it much, just point it and nail the throttle. Even after several flights, the speed surprised me at the beginning of the flight and I had to get used to it. What a great model airplane. |
Great report Dave. Which pipe on your OS 50 heli engine?
|
I am using the Mac's 6720 one piece muffler on the OS 50 SXH Hyper

I guess the flyingmachine like other GREATS is dead? Any input? |
I hope it's not dead......but if it is, the world will never know what a fantastic platform the design is!
Glad I have plans.......... |
Seems like a dead kit again. Too bad...

Interest rises and falls. The people who were going to do the ARF, 2 separate ones I believe, fell through, poor communication. Lots of excuses. I have the plans and a kit, will get around to it sooner or later.
|
I still have one in a kit but been too busy last couple of years. I'd like to scale one up for a Saito 120 I have.
|
Hmm, people are busy flying. Build season is coming.
Get your plans direct from Don.. http://www.eagle-i.us/fm/ ...and a laser cut short kit from Lazer Works http://lazer-works.com/misc.html |
anyone building the flying machine? I'm starting on my 9th one this weekend. ill post pic's as I go!......................... lets see some pic's guys!!!!

Flying 88
Sent you a PM Gregg |
Did you send me a PM? Did not get it. You can email me at [email protected] Rich
|
anyone out there have the manual for the ARF that would be willing to part with it? I just picked up one at a swap meet Saturday and didn't get the manual. I figured I could figure it out but the manual would make it easer.
|
What I really want to know is how did you manage to get a Flying Machine ARF?
I thought they were unobtanium. |

Flyingmachine... sorry!! I'll grab pics soon. Just been really busy with work. This one is number 9 that I've scratched built. I have a foam wing laying around that needs to be built. I think I'll use it for this build. Not sure yet if I want to go with a all wood wing or not? Will see!!!!
|
FLYING88, Hello!, I have both a FOAM sheet winged FM and TWO build ups. The build ups scratch built of course. ONE is full custom, you could STAND on this wing. I wish I had a Dubb Jett .60 or something for it, I have taken it full throttle straight down from about 300FT with a Rossi .45 speed motor pulled up and did so many snap rolls it was STUPID. I am truly an advocate of this BIRD. All I fly is FM and Hots 2, Everyone knows me at the field. I scare everyone AWAY. I am also the only guy running speed and tuned pipes. (that I know of). Take care and forever will the FM spirit live on.
|
I will take some pics of it tonight and post what I got at the swap n shop. it is the Zap scheme black and yellow.

It can't be the ARF version. Unless Don dumped his test platforms, and I don't believe that would ever happen!!!
I sure do wish I was Matt right now. He's a lucky guy!!!! |
Ah, Matt,
so you were the one that walked away with the FM. Good for you. Had my eye on it but I didn't sell enough stuff to get it. Were you able to talk him down from his asking price? I looked at it and the construction was different from the original. This one had dowels in the front of the wing and it did not have the metal straps for the wing hold-down bolts. Wonder how it would hold up to Don's routine? Good Deal. Doug Edited to add that there was another FM at the same swap that could have used a recovering job. This was one of the old kit-built ones. |
Talked him down to 60. I notice a few diffrences form the kit version and it was missing a few bits. I think I can get it together wish he had a manuel or some instructions. Going to be interesting drilling the holes for the wing hold down bolts, but I will figure it out. I will let you all know when I get it ready to fly.

I first saw it flown by Don in 1983 down in Florida, and wanted one ever since. Purchased the short kit from him in 2010.....
THIS THING IS A FLYING MONSTER .....HOLY MACARONI......The Flying Machine is FANTASTIC!! This little 4 pound powerhouse does EVERYTHING your fingers can do. Does so many Snap Rolls they can't be counted. Pulls about 50 G's...EASILY and stays in one piece!! This air frame IS NOT for the timid or the "faint at heart" RC Pilot, but certainly a winner in my book!! smile emoticonhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2133090 smile emoticon |
Nice scheme! What's the bottom look like? Bet that looks good in the air.

Lom;
She's not finished yet. It needs more grey scale fusion on top....and BIG stripes on the bottom....Maybe then, you "might" be able to track the vicious snaps as they happen....but I doubt it!! LOVE THIS AIRPLANE!! |
i hope you made templates off of your kit before you built it, might never see another one!

I have had mine all framed up and ready for installing pushrods for about a year n half. Kind put it up cause I really needed to think thru how I was going to estimate the exit points of the rear pushrod exits. Thinking back on it I wish I would of laud the exits out before I sheeted it. I don't want to butch it cause I meticulously sanded each panel for a NO gap fit up on each tapered fuse panel! The last thing I want to do is do patch work on the back half cause I missed the exact exit point ( I'm just analysis about that kinda stuff, scratch builders disease)..lol
That is a sweet scheme though! Lom
