Help - biplane won't do outside loop

OK.

BUSA Phaeton. It flies well in general. Roll rate is a little slow but it does tight loops. THe elevator and stabilizer are in the same plane when trimmed for straight and level hands off flight. IT seems a little under powered with an OS 52 surpass but it does OK.

When I try an outside loop, it dies and rolls out before it gets to the top. If I dive and get alot of speed it will just get over but usually even then it falls off to one side or the other.

I changed the incidence of the upper wing from +1.75 degrees to -1 degree thinking it might be working against an outside loop. Other than changing the elevator trim so that it is as stated above, it does not seem to have had any effect.

What else should I look at? I could try raising the flapperons a bit so it had a reverse flap effect.

Any ideas? THe CG seems ok. Just slightly ahead of the mark on the plans. It is pretty docile for a short winged bipe.

I thought sure changing the wing incidence would do the trick.

Ah yes the ole Phaeton I had 2 of those the second plane I cut a set of symmetrical ribs and it was an exceptional plane.
Now about your problem. Bipe's have a lot of drag to overcome the drag requires POWER. In your case the Tim Allen TV show Tool time approach would work best. MORE POWA.

Yeah. I have been thinking it is a bit underpowered. So no more Mr. Nice Guy!. Out goes the old OS .52 and in goes the Saito .72. According to the Horizon website, they have it in a 7.5 lbs plane and get unlimited vertical. The Phaeton, with the .72 should be a few ounces shy of 7 lbs. It only weghs 1.3 ounces more than the .52 and it is about 1/2" longer. I will be able to go from a brass to an aluminum spinner, balance the plane and keep the weight virtually the same.

RE: Help - biplane won't do outside loop

IN case anyone is interested, the problem turned out to be the CG was too far forward. I removed the brass spinner and replaced it with an aluminum one and, lo and behold, outside loops are easy and no bad characteristics have arisen.
