Hey guys

What are some of your sources for buying EPP (white) foam for cutting cores etc.?

I went to the local building supply wharehouse. Not Lowes or Home Depot, but a large supplier for the construction trade that I found in the Yellow pages.
They had 2'x8'x4" sheets that is used for insulation. I got 4 sheets for about $70. Enough for many wings! Call Around, I think you can find it locally.

My Foam had a thin protective plastic film that comes right off. I still would call to building supply companies and ask for insulating white foam. Maybe they do not need to insulate new construction with 4" foam in Texas, but they seem to use it here in western Pa.
Good luck!

Look for a stucco supply company or a stucco contractor. The foam is used behind synthetic stucco on buildings. I've gotten 3" 2'x4' sheets for free from contractors after the job is done.

You want to be very careful when you get foam as "all foams are NOT alike" What you want for model airplane wings is 1 lb per cubic foot, closed cell foam. While I have picked up a couple of sheets from stucco jobs, I couldn't use it as it was about 2 lbs per cubic foot, open cell foam and VERY heavy. I used to have a supplier who had exactly what I wanted in Raleigh, but they quit carrying it... so now I buy direct from the manufacturer in Martinsville, VA.... I'm not going to get into prices, but that is why the price of a foam wing has gone thru the roof... you don't want to pay shipping as it costs too much and if you go get it, it costs $40 in gas...

On another note, there is a HUGE foam supplier that is not even 15 miles from my shop... BUT.... unless I have a $3000 order, they wouldn't even talk to me!!!... I'm not kidding, when I told them what I wanted, which was in HUGE stacks behind the door in the warehouse, I was told that unless I wanted $3000 worth, that they WOULD NOT sell to me....talk about ticked off!!!! Anyway...

It is difficult to find what we want.. but you just have to keep searching...

Propbuster is right. the brand that I use is callsd "STO" and can be found at building supply stores that specialize in stucco and wall board. I gave 30 dollars for 5 or 6 in a bundle.

True Dan, EPS does come in different densities. The blanks I found from the stucco guy was "the good stuff". Awhile back I was researching foam suppliers ,and found a place that would sell me a entire Billet (just a big block) for like $350 if I picked it up. It was a huge block of foam. They would also hot wire cut it up to your dimensions for an additional fee. It was some where in NC, I'll try to dig up the company's name to pass on. I just cut a set of cores last nite from the "stucco" foam for the prototype of my Simple Stik model. It's a .60 size Sitk version (also working on a .40 size) which should be very durable for the novice flyer. Might be able to kit it for a reasonable price too

I got some shipped from the Foam Factory, located it on-line. The ad said free shipping
but that turned out to not be the case due to over size. It was virgin foam,
good stuff, 1 lb. Think it cost about $80 for one, 4" 4'x8' sheet. Mostly
shipping cost.

Dan I found a supplier in Yadkinville NC sold me 3/4 lb density white foam good to deal with also, 4x8 sheets 6" thick around $40. They will cut the thickness you need. Diversified Foam is the company name. I do have a number and contact. Brett Mathews, Diversified Foam 336-464-5512
Hope this helps
