Composite wing lay up examples
I’m about to build a composite wing and I would be grateful for some advice before I start. I have a decent amount of experience from working with composite materials, but this is the first time I’m building a full composite wing.
My main question is what laminate to use for the wings (glass cloth thichness, sandwich material etc) and also how to build the spars If I build the wing of a sandwich lay up what material is suitable? If I build the wing of a single skin (no sandwich) then what material thickness is suitable (I’m interested in hearing examples of both types of lay-up) ? When gluing the upper and lower halves together what is the best way to glue the leading edge? Wing spars and trailing edge is easily glued with an epoxy microballoon mix, but in the leading edge the fibers meet tangential. What is the preferred way of doing this strong and light? I have seen that some put in a list of balsa wood, but that seems kind of weak. The wing will be moulded in negative moulds, is 2m span, and is designed for a jet aircraft. I intend to use balsawood as sandwich material and I will use only fibreglass for the skin (while spars will be carbon reinforced). The aspect ratio is comparatively high and the thickness is quite small. For this reason I think similar lay-ups as used on high performance gliders would be suitable. Is there any web pages that has some docomentation on different lay-ups as used in different projects? I have done some googeling for pages of glider builders but without any thrilling result. Or are there perhaps any other threads here on RCU that might be helpful? I spent yesterday evening reading though many of the threads here but could not get all my answers. /David |

After some research I also found these superb web pages. They answered most of my remaining questions. http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...62&q=f5b&hl=en http://www.gliders.dk/moulding.htm /David |
