Composit skin hinges
Does anyone have any special methods of fixing the common delam problems other than adding a robart hinge to the root and tip?

RE: Composit skin hinges
Not really sure what you are refering too but I use kevlar for my hinges. Either sandwiched between the foam core and skin or laid on top of the balsa and sandwiched under the glass. The kevlar doesn't break down over time and is plenty flexible and strong.

What do you do to keeo the epoxy from wicking into the Kevlar? The UAVs I flew used Spectre fabric as the hinge. Is that better or worse than Kevlar?

RE: Composit skin hinges
Dunno a thing about Spectra fabric.
I don't do anything to keep the glue out. In fact it's all bagged at one time so there is plenty of glue in there. Once I cut the ailerons I give a bunch of wiggles back and forth and they loosen right up. Unlike FG or CF they don't break down the hinge just gets more flexible without breaking. |
RE: Composit skin hinges
I'm refering to composite planes like Comp Arfs and Krills that have top hinged ailerons. Some have been known to crack or delam and was just wondering how you would go about repairing them.

Mine are top hinged like you mention.

spectra fabric is a UHMW polypropylene material, its less rigid than Kevlar and less abrasive to cutting tools spyder fishing line is a variant of spectra if i remember correctly
